I'm going to preface this with a few qualifiers
1) Steam won't let me leave a neutral review, so that's why this is negative
2) I only have like 3 hours at the time of writing, so this is more "first impressions"
but
I REALLY want to like this game more than i do, i mean, a spiritual successor to luck be a landlord with a david symanski-esque style, sign me the f*ck up! and for the first few runs, it is fun... and then the novelty wears off, and you realize that. above many other strategy rougelikes you are at the whims of just. pure rng, this seems to be for a few reasons, since rerolls take what is basically your score, you get to see very little at a time, there's also like, mayyybe a dozen items that give you a clear direction to push a build *that you can actually afford in the early game* most of which... rely on pure rng, there also just. aren't good ways to manipulate the slots earl;y game, to the point that it can feel like the game is just f*cking with you (it's probably(?) not rigged against you, but since you have basically zero control over it, it really feels like it is sometimes) also the 1.5% chance f*ck you mechanic is. stupid, it literally just serves to punish you for... playing the game? i can understand the increased chances to it being a thing that you can choose to take on, but if it happens midgame even when you didn't take any risk you *just* lose (except maybe on interest builds), early game the score is low enough that if it just happens once you can tank it, and late/post-game it can kill you, but you geneerally have enough of a buffer that it's fine, but no matter what it just feels terrible if it happens at base chances. all fo this combines to make the early-mid game just. miserable, and it's not like the runs are really fast enough that you feel fine just going through the meatgrinder of runs, and it doesn't feel like i'm learning anything useful in those runs either

A fun and cute as hell game, a bit short. But for the price of... literally nothing, I'd say it's worth giving a shot

Antibirth was a great mod, this is not antibirth.
This is if antibirth had all of it's soul, and all of it's creativity ripped out, and replaced with SHEER malice toward the player.
Ed said that a lot of antibirth's bosses were nerfed.
They weren't, they were simplified. But that just ended up making them feel significantly less satisfying and more cheap, but not any easier
The torrent of tears was turned into a pitiable spray of random ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Some of the item nerfs were justified (Blank Card, Tech X, Book Of The Dead,)
Some weren't (Dark Bum, Sharp Straw, The Nail, Judas's Shadow, Chaos)

I'm fine with difficulty being raised (antibirth was a fairly hard mod, after all)
But my problem is that the game seems harder, but much less satisfying, even over AB+
(I'm sorry if this review is salty, but man, this is just antibirth, but less fun. it could've been much more, if Ed hadn't meddled around with it, and just let vin take the wheel, I think)

Man, okay, so this is a very good game, just don't play repentance if you aren't a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ masochist
