Everything that I could say in my negative review has already been said more or less by the user Switzerland--the game feels clunky, the physics are off, and the soundtrack does not live up to the expectations of the game.

Personally, one issue I have with the game is that the level design seems to mimic that of the later katamari games. Rather than giving you plenty of time to relax, and roll up items as you please in a zen state, Once Upon a Katamari asks you to move exceptionally quickly, and form more concise routes through stages to collect things as quickly as possible in a somewhat limited amount of time. Given how the game's physics just do not feel right, even for an expert at manipulating the katamari, I found this to be more stress than it was worth.

I really did want this game to be better than it is. But unfortunately, it seems as though the series is in fact cursed without the direction of Takahashi-san.

This is a real sequel. This right here, this is as transformative of a sequel as ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Super Mario Bros 3. You really can't understate how good of a sequel this is. Genuinely the only complaints I have are that bows aren't super fun to use, and Ranger basically has no reason to exist over Rogue, even after Ranger was buffed and Rogue was nerfed.

Eleven years ago, I got the flu, and while stuck at home, someone dear to me told me to play a little game called Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow.
Seven years ago, I finished Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, and realized I had come to this series ten years too late. It was over.
Yesterday, I finished Vampire Survivors: Ode to Castlevania, and I realized; 'When' never mattered. The only thing that mattered was that I did.

It's okay that it's over, because it got to end like this.

TLDR: 10/10 THEY MADE LILAC BETTER SOMEHOW I'M DEAD SERIOUS

Ignore my playtime, almost all of my playtime was when I had no internet. I have finished the game as Lilac and Carol.

I think for how closely I followed the development of this game, for how much of an absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ reply guy I was in Sabrina DiDuro's and GalaxyTrail's tweets just expressing how hype I was for this game, I have done a disservice for not writing a review sooner.

Let me start by saying, I do not consider either of these games 'Sonic' games, and their identity should not be likened to Sonic. They are wholly different experiences that only ultimately share the very baseline DNA of 'Going ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Hard' with the blue blur. With that said, Freedom Planet 1 was, for many years of my life, what i considered 'The Best Sonic Game'--if Sonic made a game exactly like Freedom Planet, just with a sonic skin and sonic-themed movesets, it would probably still not be as fun as Freedom Planet. I've played Freedom Planet 1 so many ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ times, at this point, it's probably more than I've ever played Cave Story.

Freedom Planet 2 is so insanely superior to the first game that i don't even know where to begin. After completing Lilac's story, I said, holy ♥♥♥♥, I feel like I got my money's worth and a half. I can't bang out a run of FP2 in one day like I can FP1, but that's more than okay to me. The game is immaculate. If you played Freedom Planet 1 and you thought to yourself, damn, this can't get better, well, TOO BAD, MORON, because apparently it can. The combat feels better, the characters have all received a massive glow up that makes them so much more fun to play that after playing this game, I don't think I *can* go back to Freedom Planet 1.

Much like Freedom Planet 1, the crown jewel of this game is Lilac. With new moves that interact with her dash, the ability to uppercut out of a jump, and her cyclone no longer taking any meter, it's like Freedom Planet 1 was you playing the game with ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ training wheels. Carol and Milla are both very fun to play in this game, way better than they were in the first game. Had Lilac stayed the same as she was in FP1, I would not be able to pick a favorite. However, for all the improvements made to Carol and Milla, Lilac matched those in spades. If I had one complaint with this game, it's that Lilac is *too fun.* She makes me not want to play as the other characters, because even though they ARE fun, Lilac is so well designed I start to feel like everything in the platformer genre was just the buildup to Sash "Lilac Freedom Planet 2" Lilac.

One other complaint I would say I have, unfortunately, I don't think Neera is very fun at all. The power character type is interesting, but I don't feel like she does anything particularly useful with it and she doesn't make fighting feel any more satisfying than it does with Carol, and neither of them are as fun as Lilac. Even so, at her worst, she is still inherently fun to move around with like the others.

The soundtrack to FP2 is, much like the first game, an absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ banger. Just amazing all around. Like, if I had to make any criticisms, it's that Merga's motif isn't quite as good as Brevon's. The storytelling in this game is also far better than it was in FP1, managing to stick a lot closer to the tone I think they intended. There are still a few moments, jokes mainly, that I don't think landed, but at the end of the day I think the game does a much better job, though I do think while Merga is a great villain, she does somewhat live in the shadow of Brevon and how perfect he was.

My only other complaint regarding the story of this game is something I hope can be adressed in Freedom Planet 3, provided it happens. There will be some story spoilers for the ending of Lilac's story ahead, so just, you know, read at your own risk.

The ending clarifying and establishing Lilac and Carol's relationship as a romantic one is something I'm sort of conflicted about. In my head, when I think about it, I like this relationship. It makes sense. They're cute together. However, unfortunately, this is only really something that extends into my head. Part of the plot of FP2 is based on Carol going off on her own and getting into trouble, and Lilac and Carol having these repeated disagreements that put strain on their relationship. This makes sense and I think is a good hardship that the two overcoming helps them understand their feelings for each other better, but my real issue comes in the fact that we unfortunately only see them disagree and fight. There are so few scenes in Freedom Planet 1 or 2 where the two of them are shown to be friends, to know each other well and get along in a way that isn't specifically a team rally declaring that they can do anything. Off the top of my head, I can only think of the scene where they're watching the movie in the first game, and even then, part of that is based on Milla, and more serves to establish Milla as a friend of Carol and Lilac, but not actually doing much in terms of the friendship between Carol and Lilac specifically. To be clear, I don't say this because I want to pick apart the writing of this game, I just want the relationship between the two protagonists to be as good as possible because I love these games. I hope for the future of the series, we can see more interactions of the two of them just being... friends. Lovers too, of course, but I think first and foremost friends.

If you asked me to list off my top 5 favorite games this game is a contender for the number 1 position, coming par with long form RPGs that left me changed fundamentally as a person, a la Trails from Zero&Trails to Azure, or short, fantastic experiences like LIVE A LIVE, Hotline Miami 2, or Katana ZERO. At this point this review has been written and rewritten entirely two times just so that I can try to convey what this game is to me.

This game is a masterpiece and possibly one of the most artistically sound games ever released. There is no other game like Katamari Damacy, and there will never be another game like Katamari Damacy. There /can/ never be another game like Katamari Damacy. I actually get emotional every time I play this game. I cannot make it through the credits without tearing up. I almost make it, too, but when I hear that line, "YOOOOOO--- yagate hikari kagayaku, seiza to nare~" something just takes me over. The spirit of this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ clump just wells up in me and I lose it. I trip on my words. I laugh. I cry. I send messages to my friends to tell them I love them. And then I play the whole damn game over again.

This game is beautiful. This game is made with love and kindness and hope all rolled into one. If more people could play this game, and really sit down and understand what it truly means, to see each other for who we really are, and recognize that the only thing that truly divides us are the walls we ourselves build, then... I think we could all become beautiful shining stars.
