extremely shallow racing game with bad handling, but it makes sense when you take into account this game's release year of 2012, and boy does it show it. game's almost entirely based around NFS's lameass speedwall system encouraging you to challenge your friends, none of whom own this game i am certain. a bunch of features are locked behind the DLC which is still, somehow, $30 - for example, many cars you see on the map, many race types, and several car upgrades. you want drift tires? fork over $30, you dumb jabroni.

the map is alright but not particularly large, and there's only like 20 different races that every car shares a selected pool of aside from the 11 "most wanted" races. other than the blacklist (of nameless faceless drivers) this game has nothing in common with NFSMW aside from the "need for speed" and "drive cars" aspects. you can't even customize the godforsaken cars. you just drive through a gas station and pray the randomized generic color you get doesn't look horrible on your current ride. the idea of "finding a car in the world to unlock it" is interesting but cars having separate upgrade pools requiring you to do one of 3 obnoxious beginner circuit races to unlock NITROUS is insane. unless you fork over some dough for the "max upgrade all of my cars instantly" DLC, because the devs knew what they were designing was bad.

this game is a stain on the Most Wanted name. go play the real NFSMW if you want a better racing game, even if it does have a mid-00s mexico filter over everything. if you can't do that go play NFS Hot Pursuit Remastered. it's like if this game was good.

annoying af DLC. the fact that the DLC is somehow completely separate from the entire rest of the game and nothing you do in there carries outside of the DLC zone...and that you cannot leave the DLC zone until you beat the entire story...SES why. who started making bad game design choices over there?

I was in the middle of writing a deep dive into all of the little things I hate about this game, but I see many people before me have already done that.

To summarize my original review, this game feels like an early access of a colony sim which only fleshed out the resource production flow and left the entire rest of the game unfinished. Colonists are basically robots with more needs, the camera is awful, there's no pausing time and speed-up is limited to 4x, planets are basically reskins of each other, etc.

There *are* mods, however, they can be a pain to set up, and there aren't too many of them. Most of them just fix all of the issues I've listed above (as well as the dozen other ones I did not mention). The way to get these mods to function is not even clear - the most-downloaded mod on nexus for this game is an outdated version of the modloader which crashes the game now. You have to dig around a bit to find a working modloader or use an external modloader like Unity. Thus, while the potential for mods to fix this game's flaws is there, it's often not worth the hassle when you could just go play a better colony sim.

The developers are nice people, and I am looking forward to the recently-announced Planetbase 2 in the hopes that it will feel like a real, finished game. In the meantime, go play Surviving Mars instead. It's what this game wanted to be.
