When crafting your team, 'families' of units give bonuses to the family scaled based on the amount of that family's units you have. Each family also generally has units that fulfill different roles (tank, dps, support) and have abilities that synergize with each other. This turns teambuilding mostly into a very simple "take all the units from the same family" and the game does a very poor job at promoting cross-family synergy.
