This recommendation is contingent on if you can find enjoyment solely in the story. If you are expecting something more akin to an elevated game narrative, you may want to come back to Adios when it is on sale.

I want to like this game more than I do. There is a lot to love; the meticulous design of the farmland, the deep characterization and sublety in the dialogue, and the astounding vocal performances. The interplay between the two characters is compelling, but only about as much as other media I've experienced.

The gameplay leaves a lot to be desired. Interactivity is limited to a fault; dialogue choices are the main focus (as they should be), but everything around it seems too shallow. The player actions such as feeding the horse, shoveling, and catching fish do a lot for the setting but almost nothing for the narrative. I had no idea how the horseshoe score was calculated, or why it even mattered. The goat milking interaction was the best but it felt a bit janky. I wanted to do more with the soda machines.

The dialogue is expertly written and beautifully performed. The game is about killing yourself through choice. Unfathomable choices about family and heritage, and what it means to witness tragedy. In my personal opinion, this kind of story would be much better served as an audioplay, stageplay, or short film. I felt connected to the voices rather than the characters. The level of skill demonstrated in the dialogue was incongruent with the game as a whole.

To conclude, this game is worth your time. It's a narrative that runs deep through the 90's American midwest psyche without being preachy. I did not personally empathize with the story but I'm sure many people will. Buy this game so that Mischief makes more.
