If you read this deep, remember that video games are not benifitial to society in any measurable way and most large studios waste time and money to horde money. Valve barely does any better... think about the fact that they take 30% of all sales.
Call of Duty sold? Valve just made 100 Million Dollars. Use that logic when looking at any of these games.
The only upside to Valve is they keep a platform running well, with good support, and people who do not care to ruin their ecosystem. Their tools and documentation are kept up with... etc.
It's a pretty big upside if you think about it but their take is totally wild for what they have.
Yes they stockpile a ton of data, but no one told them to and technically they are part of the environmental problem.
Gabe Newell himself is one of like 8 people to go to the bottom of the ocean publicly and yet shares no data on any of that.
