Absolutely fantastic experience thanks to the story, characters, environments, graphics and music.

I was expecting a very sombre and lonely world but the beautiful aesthetics and variety of characters made for a very enjoyable experience despite the cruel environments. You'll be faced with things you really wish you could avoid... it's gonna be emotional. If you like great, linear action & story driven games like Hellblade, The Last of Us and God of War (2018) then you'll love this. Not too long, not too short.

The enemy mechanics are fun. The game encourages a sneaky approach to pass enemies but with weapon upgrades you can pretty much go on a rampage so it's really up to you how you want to get past enemy infested areas. Had a few jump scares because of those pesky rats! Puzzles are fun, there are collectables, secrets and boss fights - nice ingredients to top off the interesting storyline.

I completed this in one run lasting 5 hours. The best parts about the game are the unique imagery/ depictions of Hell and portrayal of demons. Often, the objectives for areas can seem unclear and the paths are confusing which encourage you to explore. However, halfway through the game I found myself rushing through areas with no desire to explore because of the annoyance caused by enemies and lack of checkpoints or ability to continue when killed (ie. spirit getting stuck in obstacles, unable to find/ reach martyrs in time to possess). I simply wanted to finish the game ASAP as I was in agony towards the end and, after experiencing such torture, I probably wouldn't ever load the same save again to subject myself to this hence why I persevered on this one run. I definitely missed a lot though and the game is full of really interesting and cool environments. Nothing feels repeated.

If I had to compare it to anything it would have to be Amnesia, without the scares. Agony is all about gore but it isn't scary in my opinion. Maybe just shocking and gross. Both have collectibles, a main character with memory loss and a large part of the story told through collectable notes. The auditory warning of nearby base demons is reminiscent of Amensia's monsters warning sounds. It's mostly a walking simulator with some parts you can "fight" as a possessed demon but as a standard character you can't fight off the regular demons, only hide and sneak.

I'll probably try out the "Succubus" mode sometime but I need to heal. This game is definitely worth a playthrough if you like creepy games. I bought this one on sale so that's an extra win for me but right now Agony, with the UNRATED version included, is £11.39. That's less than a cinema ticket, drink and popcorn and I got 5 hours out of it instead of the standard movie-length 2 hours so yeah I'd say it's worth it.

Also you can yeet babies.
