Workers work because they are told that working will improve their conditions, but business growth tends to be rewarded with the pressure to grow. Competitors catch on, and once revolutionary methods of production become standard.

There is a pressure to undersell competition: hire fewer people who can complete more homogenized tasks, reducing the value of their labour and encouraging competition between them and other workers. As capital expands, it produces jobs it values less, prices rise, and more workers are forced to become dependent on capital.
