Early Access Review
To be honest, I don't really understand the nearly-universal praise for the game's movement and gunplay. At risk of sounding too harsh here, it feels to me more like a floaty game engine FPS preset than a high-effort product striving for its own feel. For a game that takes itself seriously as a hardcore experience, it is a bit frustrating to have such fast, low-gravity, Quake-like movement. This leads to some imprecision when trying to peek out of cover. A "walk" key at the very least would have been welcome. Skill issue? Sure, probably - but I don't think that invalidates any and all critique of this seemingly unsuitable combination.

Building on the "game engine preset feel" comment, having the same generic run/walk animation and basic vision cone + beeline-to-enemy AI on almost every non-Inheritor (i.e., non-scalie) NPC I've seen so far really sticks out like a sore thumb to my eyes. This looks rather cheap and hurts gameplay and presentation alike. Perhaps more effort has been put into the enemy designs than it seems, but it has not been apparent to me as a player.

On the upside, I did feel that there was a lot to like here otherwise. This game is clearly a labor of love, inspired by the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise, but with its own aesthetic and world-building. The latter of which is, I think, a reasonably compelling variation on the formula. So, it seems to me there is a lot to like here except the gameplay feel, which perhaps the general audience can better tolerate than I could.

Ultimately, the dev(s) put in a lot more work than I could have appreciated in my ~5 hours at review time, so it's possible the issues I have improve to some extent later in the game. But unfortunately, the feel & polish issues are such that I just don't find myself being all that eager to actually play it and see everything. I would have requested a refund had I not been past the cutoff, but since I'm stuck with it, I may give it more of a chance now or in the future and update my review later. I don't usually write reviews. I just wanted to offer a dissenting opinion this time in case it helps others approach the game with a more realistic set of expectations.
