You kinda left her hanging this morning, you know?
All I did was untie the knot.

----------------------------------------

This was a great ride from start to finish. Much like other commenters have said, it's best to just play the game :)

In spirit of the game, and for a bit of fun word play, I had to write a poem.

----------------------------------------

Joy is a malformed word,
unbeknownst to those who've heard,
seething into their open minds,
taking, hiding, behind their blinds

Merging thoughts with inane desire,
obsessive, depressive; thoughts for hire,
never-ending sleepless world
incessant, I press, come unfurled,
kiss me, dismiss me, wither like a shrub;
and now, Doki Doki Literature Club!

----------------------------------------

For those who want a bit more than just a nudge, this game artfully adds some nice older, almost lost elements to a genre that has a niche audience. For a game released for free, it has a play time that rivals some single player campaigns from AA/AAA games. The artwork is masterfully drawn, with quite a bit of detail oriented polish. There's a nice fleshed out soundtrack as well.

The best part, they actually utilize these pieces to form a whole narrative. Our audience gets a glimpse at a creators homage to a product of their life, all while setting up a wonderful 180 for our player, flipping the atmosphere. Sound work is shifted, they play with their music , and drive imagery through your head.

Even better, once you finally reach those fateful credits you'll want to push yourself to dive just a bit deeper into the community to learn every other tidbit about the game

Note, I played this game well before steam started tracking hours. I have much more play time than 1.4 hours ! Also, to be be clear most of this is written from my memories of playing this game 6 years ago now :)

Neotokyo came a bit after the golden period of massive free to play FPS games, like Combat Arms, Blackshot, Sudden Attack, Alliance of Valiant Arms among many others. However, it gave a bit of breath into what I would say was the fall of the F2P FPS model. Being a mod, it offered a plethora of modified variants to the standard FPS game modes all without the overarching micro-transaction schemes that plagued other F2P FPS games. To me, this was a gem of a game.

It offered a bit of hype on its release with a stellar trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOh3xYPrYF8 It also introduced its new populace to a great universe, namely, Ghost in the Shell. A bit topical now considering the impending release of the live action movie; I digress, this was a great introduction to interesting character archetypes. Some of which are even utilized somewhat in the F2P FPS Ghost in the Shell: First Assault (not to say that they copied, but to show it's ability to carry over the common character themes.)

In addition to it's legacy, Neotokyo had or I should say, still has one of the best soundtracks in modern gaming. Made by Ed Harrison: https://edharrison.bandcamp.com/ (Seriously, give it a listen :)).

Although I have given this game a recommendation it is quite reserved. As it stands, the game is with-out-a-doubt: dead. If possible, gather some buddies and have an in-house together, or just explore the maps by yourself. You'll give yourself a treat viewing what I believe to be some of the best put together community maps pre-workshop alongside a fantastic soundtrack.

One of the best games I have ever played. If you like good fighting mechanics, and searching for story yourself, then this is the game for you :)

The aesthetic of the entire game is beautiful coupled with great audio and a clean movement system; Devil Daggers is an awesome purchase for fans of shooters and those that like a challenge :)

Accomplishes what HM64 felt like. Does not over-reach what it set out to accomplish. Awesome game.
