Early Access Review
Right now it's a no after about 20 minutes of playing.
1st - It's an MMO yet I can only send one global message every 10 minutes - absurd - find a better way to prevent abuse than making it so new players can't even respond after asking their first question.
2nd - Inventory limit is far too small based on the variety of items you are flooded with immediately. Make the game difficult if you like, not inconvenient. Constant trips to the bank interrupt the flow of the game which I was sort of enjoying.
3rd - UI is very clunky - clicking on monsters requires programming your brain to offset your cursor from where you think it should be when clicking - not centered; down and to the right?

Will possibly revisit in the future in hopes gameplay experience is optimized.

Early Access Review
I fear early access will be the death knell of this game. There won't be a second "mass influx" of players - this was that moment - and there is pretty much no game here. One linear path of monsters to kill, one linear quest chain, 5 skills that exist in every MMO, one place that everyone starts and a small world to walk through that funnels everyone through the same zones as they level. If they have "new" ideas or mechanics that don't exist in other games, now was the time to demo those - to give me something, some reason to play Heartwood and not one of dozens of similar games that are fully developed. Right now the only reason is the "fresh start" "race to the top" motivation frenzy of all new release titles - but you need only race to level 8 or 10 before realizing this is the entire game right now. Player count and concurrent players will simply decline from this point on - and if any cool differentiating mechanics arise that would compel people to play Heartwood over other titles all of the folks who move on now while there is little to do will never know there are reasons to return. Currently too risky to invest big amounts of time with no indicators there will be any payoff down the road as the entire Roadmap are features and ideas that most/all similar games already have. MMO devs need to get back to the days of innovation where they were inventing new mechanics which presented reasons to play THEIR game above the other options. It started by offering leaps in graphical quality, every MMO making their own engines and giving every one a unique look and feel; then the invention of guilds or vassal systems, trade skills, all "firsts" in their time - but now those inventions are simply checklist items that all games have, graphics are hitting walls because all games are made in Unity or Unreal - nobody makes their own engines and assets from scratch anymore. In this era games get one opportunity to blow away the player and grab and hook them and what they are showing 1000s of new players right now is just an incomplete experience without an original vision to look forward to. The question to every game developer - if you are not offering anything "new" why are you making your game? Do you have a good story you want to tell? Do you have a unique idea for a mechanic that you can't find in other games? Why do you want us to come play your game, what are you proud to show off? As an industry much more attention needs to be put into R&D and player psychology to build game-loyalty and chip away at the hive-mind mentality of the gaming world at large.

The first game I ever had the pleasure of beta testing back in 1995 has finally come to Steam. Fair warning - the game is hard. Not necessarily the mechanics, but the lack of visibility for most of the games information. This was created at a time when socialization was placed above all else - the internet was new, and the exchange of information was necessary - so try this game if you are comfortable scouring the internet for the best resources, chatting with people online and asking for advice, joining Discord and making new friends to adventure with.

Combat is unique - numbers are hidden. Experience surprise and exhilaration when you gain a hit point or improve in the spell you are working on. Find resources online that explain what monsters to search out next. Use a variety of close and long range weapons, offensive/defensive/utility spells - use the land to your advantage and force your enemies into single-file death-traps.

Exploration is exciting - search new areas and watch the map fill in before your eyes. Discover jumping puzzles to obtain hidden Mana Nodes; the best means for raising your mana pool. There are a huge number of unique zones to explore through many expansions that were released over the games two-plus decades of existence. Lush and beautiful jungles, barren mountain mazes, dark spooky caves, and so many more wonders await.

Skill and spells are diverse - multiple different schools of magic and weapon skills to choose from with few limitations on how they can be combined. Spend time learning about all of the various options and create the perfect build for your play style. A mage who wields a bow. A warrior who summons fields of flame to scorch their enemies. A trickster who summons copies of his foes to attack them while healing himself from afar. Anything is possible.

PvP and guild wars are exhilarating - First-person gaming makes sneaking up on your enemies thrilling and watching the map for an incoming attack keeps you on edge and your ability to react swiftly means the difference between life or death. Real penalties from death like skill point or hit point loss and full inventory dropping means you consider carefully what you carry every time you leave a safe area. Seek out a guild for protection - choose between many amazing and unique guild halls - or attempt to steal one from another guild when they are least prepared.

If you are up for a challenge like those of us who have loved this product for over twenty years - come enjoy this completely free game and experience the world that inspired a genre.
