The vast majority of negative reviews for this expansion fall under the umbrella of "the story raised more questions than it answered, and introduced some new things we're only just learning about." WHICH IS FINE. Welcome to a live-service game that is gearing up for the final major chapter (The Final Shape, the next, and last, expansion for Destiny 2).

I've finished the main campaign and am still going through the post-campaign missions. While some of the urgency they try to convey in the campaign felt forced, it does make more sense in hindsight. Bungie has also announced we will be getting more Lightfall-specific quests/missions/story in the future. It may not be the most satisfying story delivery model, but it hardly merits the Mostly Negative rating it currently sits.

If you find yourself not enjoying the game, it's okay to take a break and come back later. No one's forcing you to play it.

So I suppose if you're concerned you need to be spoonfed the story or otherwise have concerns about your overall enjoyment of Destiny, maybe don't grab Lightfall just yet. But you'll want to eventually.

Countless hours (shh, ignore that hour counter), and that's with just the one 100% run. Now imagine doing 100% on all three save files...

Early Access Review
Though this is still only an alpha, there's already more than enough gameplay to satisfy myself and my friends. With an enjoyable singleplayer experience, this game really shines in the multiplayer. Spawn into a harsh, unforgiving world (sometimes on top of a cactus), rush to meet up before nightfall, and then proceed to build the best base you can to survive the unending zombie hordes. This game does require some patience with inventory management, but that only adds to the tension as you raid a town, deciding what to take and leave behind, all while keeping one step ahead of the zombies.
