Can't recommend in its current state. Fun mechanics, great art, but close to no testing.
For example: map randomly stops working can't click anything. Fix: return to menu and continue.
But: If you by accident click new game your save gets deleted, no confirmation or warning.

Massive number of such issues. If multi-stage boss gets killed by non-direct damage (eg from your minion) the game freezes and restarts the boss to its previous stage.

This should be defeinitely marked early access.

Enhanced Edition is a mobile port with mouse controls. It's unplayable and useless.
You do get an original game as well, it runs in dosbox, you can select it before launching.

One question is... why would you pay for it. I did, but LBA1 is abandonware, it's free and legal to acquire, in fact WinLBA was created by the lead programmer of the LBA1 himself.

Technicalities aside, let's get to the point:
Game itself is amazing. For 1994, it offers a story and a world better than some modern AAA titles. You start imprisoned for having dreams. There is no evil mage with skeletons laughing outside your cage. There's an authoritarian dictator running a police state that you don't really meet. Because why would you, right? Even with its cheesy names (Rabbibunnies species, srsly), it's more rooted in reality than half of the bullcrap AAA presents.

Keyboard controls didn't age all that much either, it's still playable - tank controls will take you some 5 minutes to get used to, especially if you change stances with F1-F4 (F1 is interacting stance, F2 running stance, F3 fight stance, F4 stealth). The only caveat is that running into a wall damages you which can be a Little Bit Annoying (see what I did there?). It's a solid game, with 1984 dystopian vibes all over the place and serves as a nice warm up before diving into LBA2, which is this game, but ten times bigger, prettier and with even more incredible worlds to discover.

FIND THE SOUNDTRACK BEFORE PLAYING (GUIDE AT THE BOTTOM.

So basically this game's still decent if you buy it and just play it. But you'll have it without the soundtrack. Notice how ammo boxes for the nailgun have NIN on their sides. Nine Inch Nails is what you shoot and what you listen to. NIN made the soundtrack for this game.

If you have it, if you play through those levels with this grim industrial NIN noises in your ears the experience will be just bombastic. Seriously, give it a go. It's "the early nineties: The Game" with that soundtrack. It's like playing System Shock with OST and without OST. It's just not the same

Links:
this is the guide for including the soundtrack. To do this you NEED a quake client (basically the game modified so it doesn't try to read songs off the physical CD in your physical CD-ROM drive which... you don't have, eh?)
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=119489135
Basically you get those soundtrack files (all legal btw, you payed for the game on steam, it's chill) and you paste them into the game folder (Id1 folder is what you copy/paste).

For the above to work go here:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=118401000
Basically you download a client. You extract it in your QUAKE steam location (right click on game in your lib - properties - local files - open game location). You then RENAME "Winquake.exe" to "ORIGINAL Winquake.exe" (or just delete it if you don't care). and RENAME engine executive (I used quakespasm, so I renamed quakespasm.exe) to Winquake.exe

You do them steps - you got your QUAKE with NIN soundtrack.

Get wasted, put on your headphones and blast away at 1 in the morning.

Made me feel young again.
