Your initial run of SWH will take maybe an hour or so. An hour of amazing visuals and music and gayness. If that doesn't get your attention already, know that the replay value is massively higher than that. Every level has collectible secrets not to mention the challenge of achieving gold ranks. I played this for half an hour then immediately bought the album. I never review games. That should tell you something.

I'm really bad about reviewing games, I do it so rarely, but I feel like this is one that really deserves a friendly thumbs-up. In many ways, it's exactly what it says on the tin. It's an RPGMaker game where you have a knight player character who ends up stuck in a party with a witch. They fight evil and travel the land and maybe a few romantic things happen along the way. There are lots of games on here that are aggressively positive about having openly gay content. But there's something delightful about a game that plays it so straight, if you'll forgive the pun. There's no confusion or shame about it. It's just a part of the story. And that's great.
The game isn't totally perfect. With only four characters, you have to kinda figure out how to min-max your party, but there are some interesting ways to essentially switch your characters "jobs" once you understand the equipment system. Also, if you lose track of what you're doing, there are certain places where it gets a little tricky to find your way. After obtaining the upgraded Sylvanaras, I was supposed to go back to the sisters, but no one tells you that after the first time. So I wandered for a good two hours or so. But it led me to complete side-quests, so it all worked out anyway.
Seriously, if you read the description and it sounds like your kind of thing, go ahead and get it!

Home isn't really a game in the classic sense, in much the same vein as Gone Home or Dear Esther. You walk around, you find things, you figure out the plot of the game after the fact. Home's major twist is that your decision to pick things up, push things around, go through or ignore certain doors, ultimately decides what that overall narrative is.

If that kinda gameplay isn't your thing, of course you're going to hate it. As long as you know what the general idea is going in, I don't think you'll be too disappointed. In a way, I kind of love the game not so much for its storytelling as its dependence on community-interpretation. On their website, you can see everyone's analysis of what they thought was going on.

In some small way, it goes straight back to the Lovecraftian base fear of the unknown. There are no exact answers, only an attempt to put together the pieces that are there. I'm pretty sure there are no happy endings here, just a terrible situation. I'm gonna do some more diving on another day, try and get the most benevolent ending I can, but I'm not sure such a thing is possible.

There are two or three jump scares, but as is always the case, the true monster is MAN
