As someone who has never been a fan of the MOBA style of gameplay, I can say Dota is quite fun with friends and I could definitely see myself getting heavily into it as it is very competitive (but who doesnt know that?). If you are one of the unfortunate souls (like myself) who just so happens to live anywhere near the south-east coast and doesnt know spanish, be prepared to go countless games without an english speaker. That, for me, is the only drawback to the game and is mostly influenced by my unfortunate location but other than that I would definitely recommend this game to pretty much anyone because after all it is free so there is no harm in at least trying it. If your like me you might even end up liking it despite not liking the type of game.
