One of the most well designed games I have ever played. In most city building games you are forced to build one thing so that it can accomplish a singular purpose (Build a Windmill to make flour, make flour to have bread). In against the storm every single item, building and decision has multiple uses and impacts on your game. The intricately woven dependency structure means that making something like flour for your village can come from Grain, Mushrooms or Roots all of which might be found naturally in any particular map or raised on farms. Instead of one building that's entire purpose is to create flour, flour could be made in 3 different building ranging from the most efficient production to least efficient but those buildings serve other purposes.

The gameplay loop is to start a settlement and race to increase your reputation before your impatience meter fills. This is accomplished through high villager morale, completing orders assigned by the queen and finishing events in the glades you discover as your village expands into the unknown.

Due to the rouge-like nature of the game you will be doing this loop for every settlement, yet because of how well crafted the options are in this game never once have I felt like any two settlements were even remotely close to the same experience. Every game feels unique and every decision feels deeply important due to that design that every Item/Building in the game serves more than one purpose.

This is truly a gem of a game and potentially the best settlement building game I have ever played. This is not an early access game that promises to accomplish more later. This is a complete experience that is still receiving updates that only add the the game.

A solid ode to the old school GBA final fantasy tactics games. Story starts slow and finished okay, not the most memorable but good enough it doesn't distract from the gameplay. Game shines the most in the combat. Combat is very good, progressive building of mechanics until you learn everything the game has to offer. Game is worth it at full price and a definite must buy when on sale.
