Probably the best HD-2D remake of a classic PSX JPRG yet.
The graphics are gorgeous. It implemented quite a few quality-of-life improvements (like sped-up dialogue) that I now really miss in other games. My one major criticism is combat: SO2 probably has the worst game balance of any JRPG I played. Even in the lowest difficulty you will find spikes and unfair boss fights (looking at you, endgames bosses spamming their abilities every 2s). So even if you are just playing for the story in the lowest difficulty you are forced to deal with the many, many mechanics SO2 throws at you. While for me and others nostalgia is probably doing quite a bit of lifting, it is still a good game. Recommended.

Less of a game, and more of a 2h sequence of very british skits. *Very* funny.

"'Padded like an A-cup on school picture day" - Yahtzee

FF7 is one of the best RPGs ever made. FF7R is an early UE4 remake of the first 1/3 of FF7, directed by Nomura and stretched to 30h. This should tell you enough: it has cool visuals, bad performance (still stutters on a 4090) and lots of slow narrow passages to hide loading. Story devolves into the usual Nomura nonsense by the end, which is a shame given that the original plot is one of the best in JRPGs. Gameplay is very padded, and inconsistent: some parts are quite nice, some parts are horrendous (e.g. Motorball). It is probably worth slogging through it to get to FF7 Rebirth, but barely.

A beautiful homage to Chrono Trigger. It really nails the vibe, graphics, and music (which contains guest tracks by Yasunori Mitsuda himself). Gameplay is a nice evolution of the classic JRPG formula. It starts to drag by the end, with the tedious path for the true ending. Regardless, if you have any type of nostalgia for that SNES/PSX era you'll probably play it smiling ear to ear. I did.

Garl is the best.

If LocalThunk monetized it like a gacha game he would be able to buy a small country by now

Took 15 years, but it is the best way to experience HL1. Quality has its dips, some parts are confusing. Interlooper is way too long. But the gunplay is very solid, the setpieces are nice, movement is Source goodness. Xen looks spectacular. Onwards to Blue Shift =D

The standard for roguelite action games. Great story, as par for Supergiant. Great soundtrack, as par for Darren Korb. Extremely polished mechanics. Cerberus is a very good boy.
