It's hard to mess up these incremental games, but this one manages it. It just isn't fun. The main limitation you run into is just waiting for the right enemy to spawn as you collect tons of resources that ultimately mean nothing after a you get the few upgrades for it. Also, some of the audio and visual often unsatisfying and even annoying. What is that annoying sound that plays all the time - is it an enemy attacking me? Why do my turrets not shoot half the time? Why is there a "coin" currency always on display, despite it being used only for a few upgrades and never again? What is the point of XP? Why are there level gates on the difficulties, even though there is absolutely no way I'll have the resources required to unlock the next difficulty before hitting the level requirement?

Puzzle Quest is a great classic, and I do remember enjoying this years ago. However, like others have said, there are some serious annoyances.
  • Resistances. God I hate resistances. It adds little strategic depth, if any, but really amps up luck-based annoyances. Playing as an Elementalist, you basically just had to deal with it since every class spell uses every mana type. Also, why tf do enemy resistances affect self buffs?
  • The "AI cheating" is very obvious. It's not the worse - gives the AI more of a chance without just increasing their health/damage. But it would make the game far more strategic if you could preview the next few rows to drop, rather than having it hidden and clearly in the AI's favor.
  • The adventure part sucks. I could swear older games had you actually going through dungeons and interesting locations. This is just a bunch of dots on a generic fantasy map.
  • Too much pointless grinding. Even the main quest is level gated, so I have to grind side quests just to level up to grind the main quest, even if my build was strong enough to not need the levels.

If they dropped resistances, toned down the "lucky combos" for the AI a little, and shortened the campaign substantially, it would actually be fun to play through a few times. It's fun to learn the class, come up with some builds, put it to the test, then move on. But as it is now, it feels like a chore and a slog.

It's a good game. Not great, but good. I like the "combat", which can get nice and chaotic if you don't take advantage of pausing while shifting spells / items, and try to parry every attack.

However, there's quite a few annoyances:
  • Some resources are tedious to stock up on (like stone)
  • There is no easy way to know what fish wants what without putting your hook over it, so you can waste trips just going up and down. If there is a way to change your bait during a cast, it comes much later.
  • Following the water streams quickly becomes annoying and slow as you wait for it to change direction, especially when trying to get resources
  • There are way too many fetch quests, especially just having you walk back and forth between areas
  • It is a nice day for fishing, but most of my day is spent just talking to dingdongs and picking up garbage, not actually fishing

Ultimately, my game crashed at one point, so I loaded back in but the menu defaulted to "New Game" instead of "Continue". I selected it, then immediately alt+f4'd out after I realized that. I don't know if my save was lost at the crash, or if deleting my save happened by choosing "New Game", but my save was completely lost that simply. As far as I can tell, theres no backups or multiple saves. Definitely a huge flaw in the save system. While I was hoping to complete the game and was still enjoying it, I'm not about to spend 8 hours grinding through 1 hour of fishing and 7 hours of fetch quests again.

Fun little game. Still a bit barebones right now, but looking forward to seeing more content.

Early Access Review
Amazing action RPG. Basically Diablo-in-space, without wasting time with story or walking around, condensed into nice little areas. Very addicting, and with lots of build variety and experimentation. The crafting system is also absolutely amazing, removing all the annoying tedium and guess-work.

A few things that would make it much better:
  • More stat details. Like, lots more. Both on what stats do / mean / how they work together, but also post-battle stats. With a kinetic damage build, I have absolutely no idea how useful the shrapnel is and how much damage it actually does. Or what weapon is doing more damage. Or what damage is hurting me most.
  • Loot filters. For all 3 characters, I ended up only using two of the same weapon, and didn't care at all about any other weapon. I'd rather just filter every other weapon out, and even filter out lower quality versions (though I'm not sure what the quality even does...).
  • Auto-loot dice/currency. Minor thing, but would really speed up end-game.
  • For the infinite end-game, let me go more than one level at a time. Let me spend currency to like jump 10+ levels at a time. With a strong build, it is annoying to just plow through 100s of levels without a challenge. I stopped caring about the loot even.
  • Allow skipping the Wave timers as an optional setting. I can see it being helpful for some builds, and a good default to have, but once you know what you're doing and with most builds, it is just an arbitrary waste of time.
  • More boss variety. They all basically boil down to the same few attacks.

But for what it is, amazingly addictive game, and I appreciate it doesn't try to drag out too long by forcing needless grinds.

Absolutely amazing and solid. Very comparable to Grimrock, but with strange and terrifying enemies, and some of the most tense combat I've seen in a gridder. There are a good number of puzzles and secrets that are rewarding to find and solve, but so far it doesn't seem like anything frustratingly absurd or obtuse.

My only potential complaint is that the character building is quite simplistic. Half my stats come from equipment, not levels. Weapons are basically either quick and weak, slow and strong, or gun. I do like the magic staffs that recharge on kill, especially since you don't have to kill with the staff to recharge it. But there is basically just one character and mostly one way to play. However, I wouldn't call that "bad" or "wrong" game design, but you're not going to play through as a melee character, then want to play through again as a ranged or magic user or something.

It's a fun idea, but why make it a roguelike? Knowing my equipment will soon be just wiped out makes me care about it a lot less, and knowing my stash will be cleared out makes me not want to bother picking up crafting resources. It also makes going through the story incredibly annoying.

Awesome basis for a game, but I personally wish they slowed it down a little and removed the roguelike aspects in favor of a different progression system.

A Scottish Hylics but with the combat moved from strategic turn-based, to simple janky action RPG. Jank in its best form. It is a wonderfully unique trip.
