What a damn game.

Been following the progress of this one for a while, playing the demos off and on as they came out and sharing the experience with my boyfriend, whose also been a fan. The full release gave me all I was looking for and then some.

The movement is fast, guns are very punchy, and the swarms of enemies are a real treat to plow through. Levels are expansive and never feel like they have any dead air or empty space to linger in, always something to do.

What really makes Captain Wayne so great, however, is its presentation. The characters are fun, the music and sound design is immaculate, and the animation is gorgeous. There's a lot of charm to the game wearing its heart on its sleeve, with the inspirations ranging from the likes of Lupin III, to Duke 3D, and countless other things that have sprinkled their influence on top of already great original concepts.

My only nitpicks come from the lack of subtitles in the cutscenes at the time of writing (known issue), and instances where I felt GZDoom was reaaaaaaally buckling under the weight of the later maps. Saving the game and restarted tended to help with that latter issue, so there's a nonzero chance that was my rig at fault here.

All in all, if you're fond of classic shooters, 2000's era Newgrounds flash aesthetics, or a game that runs wild with its own designs and creative vision, I think you should pick this up.

I mean, hell, it's $10. That's a great deal for the campaign and replayable invasion mode.

Played the demo last night, was immediately hooked.

I was initially cautious from the banner and title. I feared this would be another subversive game that puts on an innocuous web 1.0 or edutainment inspired motif, leading into cheap jumpscares and milquetoast horror. What I was met with was a game that embraced surrealism and having a good laugh, instead.

Nubby's Number Factory is dangerously addictive; knows exactly how to pique the player's interest. The game incentivizes players to experiment with not only making good item builds, but analyzing where their shots will get the most bounces or stay alive the longest; all these tricks and more push the 'numbers go up' feeling that games like Balatro thrive off of.

I hope more people can sink their teeth into this game and support this dev, they've got something really good here, and I would love to see more from them.

Early Access Review
I've only played for a couple hours, but this is really hitting a lot of my high notes.

I love me some PSO1 and vanilla PSO2, small instance based action MMOs- and this game reminds me a great deal of those in its formula and mechanics.

The atmosphere is also very charming, trailing around the realms of OOT and the first Unreal.

Very excited to see this developed further.

A wonderful and charming metroidvania. The game wears its inspiration on its sleeve, while holding true to its own identity.

Highly recommend it.

Don't let my playtime betray you, I've played this game for many hours in the past as a kid.

It's very clear to me now, as an adult, that this game's heavily inspired by the Raiden series, but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable. If anything, this game is a much more approachable take on those games.

This is a wonderful re-release for modern systems, even if I have a preference for the Legacy mode (shoutouts to bobby prince's music).

My only complaint is that the controls cannot be remapped, something that was in the original Windows release. I hope that a future update allows you to do that.

Vanilla PSO2 is one of my favorite MMOs of all time, and one of my favorite action RPGs fullstop. It took the mission-based gameplay that PSO1 and its sequels are known for, and made it into an even more social experience.

PSO2 New Genesis is not a Phantasy Star game at heart. The game follows too deeply in the footsteps of open-world titles that have been made popular in the last decade and loses a lot of its identity in that regard. This wouldn't be such a terrible thing by itself, if the gameplay and story-telling weren't as hollow as they are currently.

There is next to no content currently. This might have been acceptable in the past, given PSO1 wasn't the most feature rich in its first Dreamcast outing, but later releases rectified this, and even PSO2 in its earlier days in both JP and Worldwide servers had more to do.

It is also exceedingly difficult to find things to really do with your friends and collaborate in. There's virtually no side quests, very few objectives, and the few objectives the game tosses at you are cumbersome chores. Not even gathering side-quests in vanilla PSO2 could be as monotonous.

I really wanted to like New Genesis. When the expansion was first announced, I cried tears of joy, no stretch of the truth. PSO2 has been a super important game to me both in the days of relying on Arks-Layer's english patches, and during the joyous (and laggy) launch of the game in English. I miss the magic of it all, and New Genesis is hardly a reflection of what makes Phantasy Star Online so great to me.

Maybe when this game actually gets more content, I'll try again, but for the time being? I'm not impressed. And I haven't even touched on the terrible use of microtransactions/real money.

Download this game exclusively for the original PSO2, which launches on the same executible. There is still a hell of a good game to be found in there, even if Sega's support of it is dwindling.

It's weird to think this game was something of a coping mechanism for me at a period of time. Even past that point of my life, this game has continued to be one of the most important games I've ever played, one that I always find myself coming back to for a challenge posed by the game or myself.

If you can get past its absolute grodiness and macabre motif then you'll be in for easily the best rougelite out there. Even the base game will warrant you hundreds of hours.

I cannot recommend it enough.

This is Samurai Shodown at its peak. Very solid and mostly well-rounded roster, great visuals, and super satisfying gameplay.

On top of that, some of the best netcode Steam has to offer for a fighting game. If not for the game's sake, purchase this to support Code Mystics bringing rollback to the masses.
