Animal Crossing + Hades = Near Perfection

Art
This game is absolutely incredible! The art is adorable while still managing to give an underlying creepy / satanic vibe, allowing it to be both welcoming and unsettling! I own this game on Steam and on Switch, I will say if you're not a portable gamer, the PC version runs buttery smooth and does provide better responsiveness/fidelity, although the game is still quite enjoyable on Switch via its own screen or your living room TV.

Sound/Music
The sound design in this game is pretty good, while it's not a standout feature for the game, it blends seamlessly and allows for another level of immersion, which I personally find to be the sign of solid sound design. Unless a game is centered around sound, the best sound design is that which is seamless to the game experience. Cult of the Lamb is a textbook perfect example of this.

Plot
I'm not all the way through the plot yet, but the premise is pretty basic and straightforward, which is more than enough for a game like this as it's not a character driven experience. This game is driven by its mechanics, first and foremost. That being said, the limited VA present and the premise are well executed, and definitely add to the creepy/satanic factor more than the adorable cult members. While more plot might be interesting, I honestly don't feel this game needs it, and in fact I think it would detract from the game's incredible mechanics if focused on too hard.

Controls
Don't play this with KB/M, this game was made for a controller, 1000%. That being said, it's still a bit of a curve, while the controls aren't bad, they were not immediately intuitive. Thankfully the game offers control customization, although it comes in the form of pre-determined layouts rather than per-button configuration, which I'd love to see come in an update, for both the PC and Switch versions. I use an Xbox Elite controller on my PC and a Switch Pro Controller, and I'd like to take advantage of the extra configuration available in both.

Game Mechanics
This is where Cult of the Lamb truly shines. The game combines the flowing combat of a roguelike such as Hades, and combines it with the town/economy building aspect of a game like Animal Crossing. (Hence this review's title.)

Combat
Combat is smooth once you learn the controls and is very satisfying, and scales in difficulty as you advance to the higher level crusades (this is the game term for the dungeons you head to, and where the plot of the game advances). There is a nice cohesion in the attack mechanics enemies utilize in each crusade area, which culminate in bosses that utilize all of those mechanics to provide engaging fights. The crusades also provide a decent amount of loot, although I wouldn't mind seeing a little more.

Cult-Building
The cult building aspect is also quite enjoyable, and the progression trees for your Crown, for your cult, and your followers are all pretty straightforward. That being said, I would like to see more building options become available sooner, mostly in regards to getting a town setup with basic necessities, such as outhouses and permanent shelters. The options for decoration and customization here are plentiful, and really allow you to go for a unique layout/cult each time you play the game.

Overall Impressions
This game is an incredibly addicting experience, and has a lot of polish on initial release. While there are areas of improvement, they arguably are nit-picking an excellent title. You'll be satisfied playing this game on whatever platform you choose, and you might well find yourself indoctrinated into your cult. Just hope you don't sacrifice your own life playing it too much.

A beautiful game with a unique concept, well written plot, and exciting gameplay. The only thing that could have made this better would be not having to wait as long as we did to get this port.

Tabletop Simulator is a phenomenal game for any PC gamer to have in their library. The ability to play any board game you want, with friends who you'd NEVER play them with otherwise is awesome! I particularly love to play Magic: The Gathering on a huge Discord server (http://discord.gg/yUPFhHn), but I've also played D&D, Life, Fluxx, Catan, Betrayal of House on the Hill. The game's graphics are great for those with high-end specs, and it loads on a potato as well!

Tabletop is an amazing game that I highly recommend!

Destiny is one of those games you have to be willing to commit to in order to make the most of it. If you are willing to put time into the game, it can be really rewarding, and despite a lot of the criticism both iterations of the game have faced over the years, it still remains rabidly popular among long-time devotees for this very reason.

Fantastic! As long as you're not a casual

The Steam Controller might be the only controller I've ever enjoyed using. In the past I have tried Xbox 360 Controllers, PS3 Dualshock Controllers, Xbox One, a few 3rd party, and even a Wiimote (still use it for games via Dolphin). Just couldn't enjoy using them. I am someone who grew up as a PC gamer, and kb/m feels natural, but unfortunately, it's clunky as hell in the living room, hence the controllers. What I personally love about the Steam controller is the things most people who grew up with controllers dislike: The trackpad-like control pads, and the upward curvature of the arms, it feels oddly natural and familiar to me. The other part I love so much about this controller is how customizable the controls are, and how easy it is to make the adjustments on the fly. However, all the praise aside, the controller has its faults. The general build quality feels like that of a prototype, better plastics certainly could have been used, better noise reduction (you can hear the haptic feedback clearly) , as well as small adjustments in the size of controls (mainly scaling the trackpads a little bit down, and the x/y/b/a buttons up a bit). Also, the controller is not for anyone who isn't in to customizing and configuring their gaming experience. If you want plug and play, steer away from the Steam Controller, it just isn't for you. If the rest of the features I mentioned sound like a controller you'd want, and you don't mind the listed cons, go ahead and get it.

Pros
  • Ergonomic
  • Customizable
  • Intuitive coming from a kb/m background (individual mileage may vary)
  • Beautiful and eye-catching

Cons
  • Not plug and play, needs control layout tweaking for most games
  • Low quality materials
  • Button layout could be adjusted
  • No native Windows driver support
  • Noisy

Dimmdrive is a program essential to anyone looking for serious performance out of their games. I have a new build, and am just short the money for a discrete GPU, and Dimmdrive is allowing me to play games with great graphics and performance while I wait to finish this PC off. The performance is night and day with Dimmdrive, and the more RAM you have, the more you will notice this. Imagine Borderlands the Pre-Sequel loaded entirely into memory? You can't? Just imagine playing it on a $2000 rig, Dimmdrive does that for you for $30. So yeah, buy this program, you won't regret it.

When you think Steam, this is the game you think of. Fun, Guts, Glory, and a lot of dying. Whether you like to defend with Sentries as an Engineer, or be the annoying Pyro who burns everyone to death, Team Fortress 2 is an extremely fun game. Maybe too fun.
