This feels like a step backward from previous entries. The physics engine is underused, and several important systems are missing or simplified, most notably the diplomacy mechanics that added depth to earlier games.

Build order is overly constrained by mandatory missions, pushing players into specific optimization paths. The shift to a planet-focused resource economy also changes the core dynamics in a way that doesn’t feel clearly improved. Combat balance is weak, with missile frigates dominating and encouraging blob tactics.

Development seems to be making the game worse, not better.

The game breaks away from the classic Homeworld formula in both story and art style. It’s not bad, but it feels more like an EVE Online spin-off than Homeworld. Don’t buy this expecting a traditional Homeworld experience.

Most of the content is in the campaign, which has some fun missions, but three major issues ruin it for me:

1. Too many cutscenes. You're constantly pulled out of gameplay for scenes that should’ve just been voice lines. Sometimes the game keeps running during them, causing you to lose ships. Even skirmishes have cutscenes. It’s a huge waste of time.

2. No time to salvage. You carry resources between missions, but the mission ends the moment objectives are done. That leaves no time to gather salvage unless you purposely delay completion. If you don’t, you’ll be underprepared for later missions.

3. Terrible pathfinding. Ship navigation is a mess. Units constantly die in large battles because they can’t move properly, ram into terrain, shoot allies, etc.

These issues could be fixed, but the game seems abandoned. No updates in 8 months at the time of writing—just a DLC drop right after launch.
