Well, I was skeptical because normally I don't like Souls-like games. But this is way different. First and foremost its a roguelike. The gameplay, though, is some mix of classic first-person fantasy games (I thought of Hexen, and that probably tells you how old I am), Souls-like, and melee-based extraction. I played it for 4 hours strait on my first sitdown, and I haven't done that in a while. In short, yes, it works SUPER WELL.

As a guy who doesn't have time for long-ass game levels and prefers a pause, I can say this game respects your time in terms of rewarding play. Still, the progression system is pretty deep, and in that way it reminds a lot of an ARPG (a genre I truly love). You can do some cool builds. Was it worth the money? YES. Is there some EA jank? Yes. Keep in mind, though, this is one dev, and he knocked it out of the park. It's not triple-A polished (yet) but it is already more responsive than most big-money, consumerist games released this year. It's fast, fun, and addicting.

24 hours in...into my 1st build. Poison/Physical! I stack fire and poison on myself (doing extra fire/poison melee dmg per stack), eat a stack of either, and blow myself up in a pulsating physical dmg aoe. Meanwhile, anything I poison past 9 stacks blows up, and when I kill something, it blows up and applies 14 stacks of poison (which chain-reacts explosions). Every seventh hit, I consume whatever random stacks of poison I applied and blow the monster up for physical dmg. Lots of explosions, green and red everywhere.
