3. It's nonsense. They usually say something like, "Hey, uh, you, dashy man... parenthesis, para- whatever you are. There's a spy behind you..." Which of course doesn't help me by that time.

So take your pick, but I prefer the name double dash. Why the ( ) when I could have just typed "Double-Dash" or simply typed -- ? I dunno.
