I kickstarted this game years ago, just beat it for a second time. Everybody who plays this game either loves it or says it sucks but has potential. I quite like it. It definitely needs rebalancing, some combinations of abilities are abusable and the games balanced around that, which I dont like, but otherwise it ticks most of the boxes I want in a tactical rpg. For a sequel, I'd love more cosmetic customization options for your soldiers, a character pool like in XCom 2 would be great, and the big one: modding support built in.

Its not like the first three games. You fly a starfighter, not a capital ship. Not what I wanted, but okay. I wanted more story in the SG universe, so I played it anyway. I spent most of my 44 hours in the campaign grinding money to upgrade my ship so I could progress. There's even prompts encouraging you to spend time doing this, after some story missions. That was annoying, but tolerable. In all the story I got through, there was only one character from previous games, and not even a likeable one. The huge open map was downgraded to several 4 zones per star system. Enemies barely shoot at you when you're shooting them, and when I noticed enemies clipping through structures in space that I had to fly around, I gave up and uninstalled.

I am very much looking forward to a return to flying really big ships in SG 4 (preferably without the need to command fleets). I loved SG1 and 2, and while Warlords wasnt great, it was still good.

I never write reviews, but this one's good. Yeah, it could be optimized better, but they're working on it and the gameplay is great and the modding community prolific.

The difficulty curve reminds me of Final Fantasy Tactics. Its possible, but it requires luck and perfect timing to get past some missions.

There is also no shield recharging, once a ship's shields are depleted they'll never be shielded again. And you cannot repair bases. Your mining base loses shields and drops past 50% hp? It cannot be fixed. You must scuttle it and rebuild.

The difficulty I could handle, but the inability to repair crucial things made me uninstall.
