In olden days, on Yom Kippur, the holiday when we ask forgiveness for our sins and transgressions against others, the first priest would enter the inner sanctum of the temple and speak God's name in his prayers. If his meditation wavered, he would die in there. The other priests put a chain around his ankle to fish him out in case he died. No one else could come inside, for the holiness would burn you.
