With the war finally over, Kenalin set out with a simple dream: earn enough coin to move his family to a safer region with low crime, where they could start a small farm of their own (location still to be decided).

Five years ago, he left home to travel as a merchant-trader, taking contracts from various institutes and caravans. Early in his travels he met a fellow trader named Vorin, a partnership that would shape the next few years of his life-for the worse.

The First Incident

Kenalin and Vorin secured a shared contract transporting goods for the Jesthaen Empire. When the payout finally came due, Vorin betrayed him—stealing the entire reward and their wagon, abandoning Kenalin deep in the forest. The nearest town was a week’s walk away.

Kenalin survived, but the betrayal left a long scar.

The Second Incident

Six months later, Kenalin crossed paths with Vorin again in the Hilltop capital. Vorin claimed he’d had a medical emergency, apologised profusely, and begged for a second chance. Against his better judgment, Kenalin agreed—they signed a new contract together.

History repeated itself.

While travelling the Jestha-Armada High Route, Vorin robbed him again and vanished. Kenalin was left stranded between the Hilltops and Verdean—an eight-day walk from the nearest settlement.

The Aftermath

Another six months passed. Broke, frustrated, and desperate to recover his losses, Kenalin turned to… creative means of income during his travels. In each town, he adopted a new persona:

a travelling priest offering blessings for coin

a fortune-teller

a butler for noble families

a herbal-remedy and “empowered crystal” merchant

and many others

Kenalin learned to survive by wit, disguise, and improvisation—discovering a talent for slipping into different identities when needed.
