Une narration d'une rare intensité au niveau d'un The Last of Us.

The Watcher DLC is a bit of a special case. As of today, it’s a DLC that has really divided the community. Some love it, others don’t. This review will contain a few minor spoilers about the campaign.

The Watcher has many strengths as well as many flaws, and it won’t appeal to everyone. If you enjoy exploration, then this DLC is made for you! Much like our very first playthrough of Rain World, we find ourselves once again lost in completely unknown regions. And yet, this DLC begins in an area we already know! But that moment will be short-lived, as we’re quickly teleported into the new regions introduced in the DLC. Unlike the base game, the Watcher regions aren’t connected by gates but by portals. This portal system is quite different! Personally, I’m not a big fan of it. It has a lot of issues, and it doesn’t really feel like we’re exploring a cohesive map, but rather fragmented regions that exist in different timelines from one another.

It’s important to know that there’s absolutely no guidance in this DLC. We’ll quickly understand our protagonist’s objective, but unlike the base game, there’s no overseer to give us hints on what to do next.

The Watcher’s abilities are interesting. Unlike the Artificer or the Spearmaster—and as the name suggests—its skills are mostly about avoiding combat and simply observing from a distance. It’s a bold move from Videocult! Encouraging a gameplay style that favors thought and patience over rushing and fighting. Again, it won’t be to everyone’s taste. That said, this kind of gameplay is somewhat reminiscent of the base campaigns, which also favored methodical play over combat. It’s an approach I personally enjoyed.

As for the story, it’s—as with the game’s main story—pretty cryptic. Maybe even a little too confusing at times? Nothing is explicitly laid out. Almost all of it relies on the player’s interpretation. Where the original story had colored pearls to explore and uncover lore, the DLC story includes no colored pearls at all. For me, that’s a major downside to this expansion. Adding colored pearls could’ve really extended the game’s lifespan and given players a solid reason to explore the many regions The Watcher introduces.

To conclude, it’s important to note that The Watcher is—not yet—complete. This was confirmed by James; a second part of the DLC will be released on consoles to complement this first half. All in all, this DLC isn’t a bad addition, but in my view, it strays quite a bit from the base game. Exploration isn’t easy, and it’s clearly intended for veterans, not newcomers. But we still find the spirit of Rain World and the world we’ve grown to love. A solid 5/10.

Early Access Review

Jeu assez exigeant techniquement parlant.
