Dead Island 2. A game that on release was getting the most mediocre, bland, and just meh reviews was still a game that I was very much excited to play. As someone who thinks that the original Dead Island is a 50/50 game, in terms of enjoyment, etc, etc, I was still looking forward to the sequel because despite being under new management, from everything that I'd seen looked really good.

Positives. The environmental mechanics, and more importantly the gore mechanics are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ brilliant. It's clear to me that the developers put a lot of time and effort into the mechanics because I didn't see a single flaw in them. The weapon modding and overall combat, I think was really solid. Visually, I think this was very impressive and the level of detail they put into this game was really nice from the locations to the zombies themselves, I think it looked really nice throughout. Small things like the soundtrack, sound design, and pacing were all pretty nice. I also had and am still having fun with a lot of the side missions this game has, too and as someone who doesn't typically do side quests in games, that says a lot to how much I enjoyed them.

Negatives. The biggest flaw I think Dead Island 2 has is it's narrative. I think for all the time they put into the mechanics took away from this game's story because I think it really struggled. In addition to that, the dialogue was pretty rough throughout and at point was bordering on ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awful. I understand this game and this franchise is silly but it's like the humour is 10 years too late because so many of the jokes fell completely flat and were just insufferable at times. A lack of enemy types, bosses, and good side-characters were noticeable, too. When it came to the standard enemies, they either got boring after a while or they just got annoying to deal with and not because they were hard, they were just annoying. And if none of those issues were bad enough, the ending might be one of the worst endings I've ever experienced. It didn't even feel like a fully fleshed out finale, instead it felt like the game just ends after you've had a fight that you already had several times before hand. Straight up, the ending sucks.

With all the good and with all the rest included, it may be a hot take when I say that I actually prefer this game to the original. I think it flows a lot better, I think looks ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ superb, and my enjoyment level was just miles ahead. However, this is nowhere close to a perfect game or even that amazing but I do think this is a very good and bordering on great game. Flaws and all, I'm giving Dead Island 2 a 7.3/10.

Considering I started with the newer Resident Evil games, I was fairly surprised with how well done the first Revelations game was. There were some issues here and there, but nothing that was too major or took me out of it. If I were to compare it to the rest of the franchise, it would rank fairly low. However, taking the game as is, I thought it was a really enjoyable addition to an already stacked franchise. All in all, if you're a fan of the franchise, more specifically the older games, like Resident Evil 5 and 6, I think you'll like Resident Evil Revelations 1. 6-6.5/10, in my opinion.
