Hi there,
As a first step I’d suggest checking for a plugin or theme conflict as the possible cause.
You can do this by temporarily deactivating all the other plugins except for UpdraftPlus.
To test for a theme conflict temporarily switch to a default theme like twenty twenty five.
After you’ve performed these tests please message me back and let me know the result.
Best regards,
Nick
I deactivated all the plugins except for Updraft Plus. This did not have any affect. Next I switched to the 2525 theme. Same result.
Can you check if you have mod_security enabled?
What kind of server are you on?
I do not know what “mod_security is I am on a shared servicer from Hostgator. They call my plan a “Baby Plan”.
Hi there,
Thank you for trying the conflict tests. I’m sorry they didn’t fix the problems.
I found this reference to mod_security on a Hostgator information page here:
https://www.hostgator.com/help/article/what-security-measures-are-used-to-protect-my-server
I checked my Hostgator cPanel and there isn’t an option I can see to control it.
This means you should contact Hostgator and ask them to create an exception.
It’s actually quite a common request and I’ve found their live chat responsive.
Best regards,
Nick
I will try to get the mod_security exception but I doubt it will be helpful as all my other sites that are hosted on the same server can be backed up with Updraftplus without issue.
Specifically, what should I ask Hostgator to do?
Hi there,
When you mention other sites work fine you may be right about mod_security not being the issue.
If it were the issue we would ask Hostgator to create a rule or exception to unblock the connections.
It’s always more difficult for us here as we’re not allowed to access your server to take a closer look.
Can you click on some of the plugin links/buttons using a browser console to view error messages?
The purpose of this is to see what, if anything, is happening when you try to use plugin controls.
As you’ve mentioned other sites work fine it does imply the problem is unique to this site’s setup.
Best regards,
Nick
Are you on a dedicated or shared server?
If you are on a shared server they may tell you that they don’t offer the option to turn it off in which case you will need to ask them to whitelist the triggered rule.
Here is what to tell Hostgator: You are being prevented from saving your UpdraftPlus setting in your site. You have contacted UpdraftPlus support and they think in might be related to a security module such as mod_mod security. Can you they check this and either disable it or whitelist the triggered rule.
I have passed that information on to Hostgator support. I will keep you posted.
