As part of recent changes to our WordPress site we deactivated an old plug-in that we used for integrating our client payments and scheduling software, Mindbody, into our site. We now integrate with Mindbody through a separate site/host that integrates more natively. The Mindbody plugin info page (https://wordpress.org/plugins/healcode-mindbody-widget/) notes that this is a legacy plug-in, which is what prompted that long-overdue shift in the first place: “This plugin has been closed as of March 3, 2021 and is not available for download. Reason: Guideline Violation.” It was still working, but increasingly causing problems with our clients.

We deleted all pages and shortcodes that were connected in any way to this Mindbody plug-in. However, when we try to delete this plug in, the following error results: “Deletion failed: There has been a critical error on this website.Learn more about troubleshooting WordPress.”

Is there a way to safely delete this old plugin?

  • Hi, did you try to delete it via FTP or File Manager in cPanel?

I assume you are trying to delete the plugin via the backend by clicking on β€œDelete” after it has already been deactivated? Then it probably fails because of the uninstall routine of the plugin. Nobody here will be able to tell you why and how – only the plugin support, which is apparently no longer available, could do that.

However, you can try to delete the plugin via FTP. No uninstallation routines will be executed, i.e. the plugin data will remain in your database – it will just no longer be executed or taken into account. This should not result in an error message. However, make a backup of the project beforehand.

Indeed, the deletion attempt is already after it has been deactivated. We’ve been through every page, plug-in, code block, etc. many times to see if this plug-in could be linked to something that is preventing a deletion, but can’t find anything. Any auto-load settings have been manually turned off in our options table.

To your point, it is an orphaned plug-in, so there is no longer any plug-in support to turn. We have a on-call WP specialist we sometimes turn to, but he can’t figure it out either.

We will check out your FTP advice – thank you!
