For anyone else having this issue (I read many) during an SMTP plugin update, my email configuration was reset to default. That was the reason for the error. I assume the default settings are somehow associated with GoDaddy and/or Plesk and that is why you receive that very specific error message even if you don’t use GoDaddy or Plesk.
I do my own hosting through a Gridpane Developer panel plus Vultr or Digital Ocean. I have Post SMTP set up as part of my new build plugin bundle, so it is installed automatically on all of my websites. With over 100 sites using the plugin, why is this the only account that is having the issue? How could it be connected to hosting?
I don’t use plesk

In reply to: [Spam protection, Honeypot, Anti-Spam by CleanTalk] An error of type E_ErrorFor instance, today I pulled up the Post SMTP email log and started scrolling through the pages (which are mostly failed attempts at sending the Cleantalk communication report). After clicking to move to page 3 of the results, the browser switches to “a critical error has occurred” screen. When I deactivate the Cleantalk plugin, I can scroll through the log without any problems. Yesterday was the first day I actually received an error email from WP, and that is the partial message I received above. The only plugins mentioned are Post SMTP and Cleantalk.
I do not have “send connection reports” enabled, but they are apparently still attempting to be sent.
