Solution suggested by @jakubzakrzewski appears to work ok. Located the file and changed it. Tested it with latest version of CF7, latest version of WordPress and PHP 8.3. No backslashes appeared on save.

In reply to: [Contact Form 7] backslashes added to ” characters in shortcodes when savingYour problem is caused by changes in CF7 version 6.1 which have affected CF7 Smart Grid. I am guessing that CF7 author will say the problem is in CF7 Smart Grid. I don’t think the developer is active on CF7 Smart Grid anymore. He wasn’t the last time i checked. You can temporarily get around the problem by rolling back CF7 to the previous version before 6.1 was released.

In reply to: [Contact Form 7] Escape character being added before ” with version 6.1I can now see that this problem occurs on sites using CF7 6.1 and CF7 Smart Grid Layout. It is the interaction of these two plugins causing the problem. It is also being reported in the CF7 Smart Grid Layout support thread. Others have commented disabling Smart Grid Layout, then editing the form, and turning it on again after it has been saved. Just in case anyone has just discovered this.

In reply to: [Contact Form 7] Spinning icon after submit (intermittent problem)Firstly, I have to say I am disappointed that there has been absolutely no response to this request. I have some more information now, just in case anyone else gets intermittent forms being sent. I did trace this to a sequence of error messages in the control panel log. The error messages were not necessarily connected to Contact Form 7, but would have impacted the processing of any forms. The error message indicated that the wordpress installation could not connect to the backend system. They were quite frequent, and while they were present a lot of the time, they were intermittent, but in one case did correspond to when a form was submitted but not sent. The solution which has been under test for over a week was to increase memory in PHP and in the WordPress installation, increase the size of data sent to the back end for processing. (these decisions were made because we wanted to rule out the possibility of them being a cause). Most importantly though it was checking the frequency of control panel induced calls to wp-cron. In this installation wp-cron was triggered outside of wordpress in the control panel. They were being triggered 1 per minute. Whether that is too high is debatable, but it has worked fine for years. However it is clear that the availability of resources with this host have been trimmed down over the years. So jobs were backing up. Increasing wp-cron to once every 10 minutes stopped the errors. It is a matter of time before we can confidently establish whether the form processing can complete every time.

In reply to: [Contact Form 7] Spinning icon after submit (intermittent problem)BTW: I have checked the hosting error logs as well which can indicate a conflict between plugins and themes, nothing of any significance is recorded.

In reply to: [Contact Form 7] Submit button just spins, doesn’t send emailI have this issue too on several sites (6). It is highly intermittent, probably affects less than 3% of forms submitted, it is usually working ok, but the symptom I am given by users is a spinning symbol. But the page does not change to indicate the message has been sent. It is stuck there. I have not been able to replicate it. These forms are all complex and use a formatting plugin.
What is happening in the form while the post submit symbol is spinning? What is it waiting for? In all of my cases there are conditions on fields, some are mandatory, some are certain variable types. I am told post submit there are no warning messages. So it looks like the form has been parsed for errors.
Would appreciate some guidance on how to debug this.
I also use CF7DB, under these fault circumstances the form is never recorded. Only successfully sent forms are recorded.
Btw, love the plugin. I use it everywhere.
I have re-enabled auto updates, allowed the site to update to version 4.15.6 and confirm that the problem has been resolved. Many thanks.
Thank you for your help here. Very much appreciated.
Ok, check your email.
OK, done that for you.
The bug was first reported to me on this form which uses your plugin. Professional Referral Form | Home-Start North Somerset. This is where I started to chase the problem. All I can say is version 4.15.4 works ok, and all previous versions have worked ok. Version 4.15.5 introduces an incompatibility which prevents CF7 from completing the transaction and reporting to the user that the form has been sent.
Vanilla CF7 forms without smart grid do use the redirect function in Smart Grid, so yes there is a relationship.
@aurovrata I have updated your plugin on the following website. If you go to this page and enter something into the form (this form does not use Smart Grid, but it is used elsewhere in the website) you will see the form is never submitted. Link is here: Contact Us | Home-Start North Somerset you will be left with a spinning dot that never goes away. Downgrading the plugin will resolve it. Which is what I am doing as a short term fix.
Yes that is correct. I am currently working through around 15 sites and freezing the revision level to 4.15.4 to ensure that they continue to work. I can place the bug on a site if you wish to take a look.
Sorry there was an error in my previous message. Roll it back to version 4.15.4 that version works ok.
I can confirm that rolling this plugin back to version 4.15.5 this bug goes away. Everything works fine. Underlying CF7 behaves normally, the spinning dot disappears and the message sent text comes up.
