Gwyneth Paltrow reveals that she once turned down a sex scene with Ethan Hawke.

The 53-year-old actress and the 55-year-old actor reunited 27 years after Great Expectations to discuss what making the film was like and more for Vanity Fair.

During their conversation, Ethan asked Gwyneth if she remembered the “love scene” director Alfonso Cuarón had pitched for the 1998 film.

The Goop founder recalls the filmmaker telling her about a scene where Ethan‘s character would “go down on” her and her initial reaction being: “Oh my god, my father’s going to have a heart attack.”

Ethan chimed in with his impression of their director at the time: “‘The camera is going to go down your belly, and then it’s going to go up your breasts, and then it’s going to go in your face as you reach ecstasy. And then when you reach ecstasy, the light will explode like the sun!’”

They both remember Gwyneth saying she wasn’t going to do it, with her recalling how “self-conscious” she was at the time about her dad and grandfather seeing that “kind of stuff” at the beginning of her career.

“It really bothered me,” she said, adding, “Now, I wouldn’t care.”

But the Before Sunrise star praised her for how she handled it.

“You had an awareness of the way that the business works, and the ways in which those kinds of images could be manipulated and what it meant to your dad,” he said.
