Jonathan Groff Says He Reconnected with Ex Gavin Creel Before His Death, Reveals Their Final Text Exchange

Jonathan Groff is opening up about reconnecting with his ex-boyfriend Gavin Creel before he tragically passed away last year.

The Tony-winning actor shared in a June 2024 interview that while he was dating Gavin in 2009, he was inspired by the actor to come out as gay publicly.

Jonathan told The New Yorker at the time, “Then I fell in love with Gavin Creel. We were doing this march on Washington. The woman from Broadway.com was interviewing me, and she was, like, ‘Who do you represent at this march?’ And I froze. She saw me get tight and was, like, ‘Oh, never mind.’ I remember looking at Gavin, who was holding a bullhorn, directing people into the march. And I was, like, I f–king love him so much. I’m coming out. I’m at the f–king gay marriage-equality march! I walked back over to her and said, ‘I’m here because I’m gay. And that’s what I’m sharing with you.’ She said, ‘On the record?’ And I said, ‘Yes, on the record.’ I hadn’t planned it. It just happened that way.”

The photo seen here was taken of Jonathan and Gavin at that exact march!

Jonathan spoke with the same interviewer at The New Yorker Festival this past weekend and shared how that interview helped reconnect him with Gavin.

Gavin Creel to Get Partial Broadway Lights Dimming, Fans Slam Broadway League for Not Giving Full Honor

The Broadway League is facing immense backlash on social media after announcing plans to give late actor Gavin Creel just a partial Broadway lights dimming.

For those who aren’t aware, Broadway theaters will dim their lights at the same time to pay respects to influential members of the community who have passed away. Sometimes, the Broadway League chooses to dim the lights at just “select” theaters and reserves a full dimming for only the most beloved people.

Gavin died earlier this week at the age of 48 following a brief battle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer.

It was announced on Friday (October 4) that the Broadway League will only dim the lights of 11 out of 41 theaters in Gavin’s honor, one theater from every theater owner on Broadway.

“It is hard to fathom the loss of Gavin Creel,” said Jason Laks, Interim President of The Broadway League. “Not only was he an actor of the highest caliber, but he was also a committed activist and champion for so many causes both within and outside of our industry. Gavin gave of his whole self to our community, both in his performances and his charitable work. The Broadway community is lucky to have known him both as an actor and an individual, and to have benefited from the joy that he brought into so many people’s lives.”

Fans do not believe this is enough. Gavin was a Tony Award winner and three-time nominee with eight Broadway credits to his name. He was also one of the most beloved members of the community who was passionate about helping others and passing his love of theatre to the next generation.
