'The Sandman' Ending Was Planned Long Before Neil Gaiman Allegations Surfaced

The Netflix series The Sandman is coming to an end this month after two seasons, but the show isn’t ending because of those allegations against Neil Gaiman, as some may think.

Gaiman, who wrote the comic book source material, was accused of sexual assault by multiple women in a New York Magazine cover story that was released in January 2025.

Netflix confirmed The Sandman‘s cancellation news just days later, which led fans to believe the allegations were connected to the decision, but the two-season run had been in the works for a long time.

David S. Goyer, who co-created the show, confirmed this in a recent interview.

'The Sandman' Season 2: Netflix Releases Trailer for Second & Final Season!

Netflix is giving fans of The Sandman a first look at season 2!

On Tuesday (June 17), Netflix released a trailer for the second and final season of The Sandman. The new season will consist of 11 episodes and will be split into two volumes. Volume 1 will be the first six episodes and premieres July 3 while volume 2 has the final five episodes of the season and premieres July 24.

A bonus episode that follows Death, played by Kirby Howell-Baptiste, will be released on the streaming service on July 31.

On Thursday (April 17), Netflix debuted the teaser trailer for the second and final season of the Tom Sturridge-led series, which has been split into two separate volumes.

'The Sandman' Canceled by Netflix After Two Seasons

The Sandman will not be getting a third season.

On Friday (January 31), it was announced that the Netflix show, based on the DC Comic series by Neil Gaimain, has been canceled after two seasons.

Showrunner Allan Heinbarg shared in a statement with Variety, “‘The Sandman’ series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season.”

'The Sandman' Season 2 Cast: 14 Actors Returning, 5 Stars Seemingly Exited, 3 New Cast Members Revealed!

Production has begun on the second season of the Netflix series The Sandman and new details have been revealed about the cast, including three new actors who have joined the show.

“This week we officially restart production on the next sequence of stories of The Sandman for Netflix,” author Neil Gaiman wrote in a letter to fans in November 2023. “Genius showrunner Allan Heinberg and the countless people in front of and behind the camera are building something endlessly special, and bringing these stories to life in a way that would once have been unimaginable.”

The 11-episode first season is currently streaming on Netflix. It’s not clear yet how many episodes will be in season two.

Netflix has confirmed that 14 actors are returning, which means there are at least 5 stars who likely won’t be back.
