Time Out #38 - Reminder

Our current Time Out challenge is running for one more week.  This is the photo we are using as inspiration.

I saw this picture at Hobby Lobby and it gave me more inspiration for my card.

So this is what I ended up with.  I first sponged the navy stripes on white cardstock.  Then I die cut frames from white and navy cardstock.  I cut them about 1/3 of the way up and adhered the white frame on top and the navy frame on the bottom of the striped cardstock.  The sentiment was stamped in red ink, I popped up the red anchor, and added sequins.  I wasn't going to add the sequins cause this card looks more masculine, but I thought it needed something.  In hindsight, I wish I would have made the stripes lighter like in the Hobby Lobby photo to make the frame stand out more.  Oh well!

You can see more inspiration and can link up your card on the Time Out blog.

Just Us Girls #301 - Trend Week

Hi everyone!  I'm very excited today because my favorite band of all time, The Rolling Stones, are in my hometown Buffalo, NY!  My best friend Maria and my cousin Renee are going to the concert with me!  The band has been getting excellent reviews on this tour!  They've been visiting around town today.  They were at a local restaurant yesterday and today they were at the Darwin Martin house, which was built by Frank Lloyd Wright.  I wish I could have run into them somewhere!  It's on my bucket list to meet them...I doubt that will ever happen!  I'll take pics of the concert and let you know how the concert was.

Well, back to why I'm really posting today!  The Just Us Girls challenge this week is a trend challenge. I'm the hostess and I've seen lots of gold being used on cards, so that's the challenge...use gold.

Please excuse my photo.  The light I use above my light tent is out and hubby hasn't changed the bulb yet.  I took about 13 photos all over my house and outside too and his was the best one.
I purchased these Paper Smooches dies the other day and thought they'd look cool in gold.  I have a set of gold flatware that I use with my china for holidays.  That was my inspiration.  I die cut them from gold glitter paper, added some gold washi tape, some sequins, and a gold sentiment.  The main panel is popped up with fun foam.

You can see more from the design team and our guest on these blogs.

Tag You're It! Challenge #3

I love making tags, so I was thrilled when this Tag You're It challenge blog started.  This week, they are teaming up with CAS(E) this Sketch.

I was at my local stamp store this afternoon and picked up a new paper pack and this anchor die.  Little did I know they would be used today on the same card!  Score!  This tag started out with a kraft tag.  I stamped the rope image in kraft ink then added the pattern paper.  The anchor was cut from another pattern from the pack and white to make it sturdier.  They were adhered together and added to the tag with dimensionals.  I stamped the sentiment in red ink and created the banner end.  It was also adhered with dimensional tape.  The stars were added, and there is some Wink of Stella shimmer on the anchor and stars.  Lastly, I added the jute ribbon.

That's it for me today.  I have more to share this weekend, so stop by again!

Seize the Sketch

Hi friends!  I went to my LSS yesterday and purchased some more fun supplies to play with.  One of the purchases was this Paper Smooches set called Hooties (love that name!) and the matching dies.  Well, I'm a messy crafter and now can not find the die for this owl!  I guess it's karma because I just commented on someone's blog who said she misplaced part of a stamp she cut apart, but found it later.  I'm thinking it's in my trash can.  I've looked in there two times, but I think I need to do a better job in there.  I'm so mad!

Anyway, I cut the owl out of watercolor paper and stamped the image using Archival jet black ink.  He's colored with Distress markers and a water brush.  I added glossy accents to his eyes.  The branch in the stamp set has a paisley pattern on it and it didn't work well with my pattern paper.  So I stamped it, cut it out, and used Hero Arts latte chalk ink to color the back side of the branch.  I just used the ink to paper technique to color it.  Then I ran it through the wood grain impression plate.   The main ivory panel was also run through the wood grain impression plate.  To finish it off, I added the happy birthday sentiment (can you see it on the bottom?), button and twine, and the crystals.

The sketch is from this week's Seize the Sketch challenge.

I'm also hooking this up with the Catered Crop birthday challenge.  This is a new challenge to me, so I'm hoping I'm legal in entering

Stencils + Glitter

Well Jennifer McGuire had my attention again the other day with this video.  I just had to try this technique and CASED her cards.  It's such a cool technique!  You have to watch the video to see how she did this.  It's too much to explain, but I used Glitter Ritz for the technique.  These cards use Ocean Spray and Cool Highlights glitter and the Large Lotus Pattern stencil from Hero Arts.  I built up the "thanks" die by cutting it out 6 times and then covering the top one in glitter.

With the leftovers, I created this card.  I embossed the white base piece with a linen impression plate.  The pieces on the side were cut off the sides of the piece used on the card above.  I kept them to use somewhere and I thought they looked nice on the sides.   The "thanks" die was created in the same way as above.

These cards are so pretty and shimmery in real life.  That Glitter Ritz is some really cool stuff!

Just Us Girls #224 - Color Challenge

Happy Saturday!  This week over at Just Us Girls, Vicki chose this color challenge that just happens to be one of my most favorites!  I love blues and browns/kraft.

This card kind of took on a life of it's own.  I started out with the intention of just making a tag, then it evolved!  The tag was die cut out of watercolor paper and colored with Baja Breeze reinker and water.  Then I took Pumice Stone and Broken China distress paints and dropped some paint mixed with water on the tag.  Love that look!  The hello die was created by adhering strips of Kraft, Baja Breeze, and Marina Mist cardstock onto a scrap piece of cardstock and then die cutting the word.  The flower was die cut from felt in Kraft and blue.  The cream background was run through a mesh embossing folder.  I added some Wink of Stella shimmer to the word, but it's difficult to capture the shimmer in the photo.  I added some seam binding to the tag as well.

Freshly Made Sketches - Thanks

Happy Monday!  It's a short week for me because of the Thanksgiving holiday!  This weekend I was pretty busy in my stamp room.  This is my third post in a row!  That doesn't happen very often.  Anyway, my niece called on Saturday and asked me to make her a thank you card for her nursing teacher.  She wanted something masculine (her teacher is a male) and nursing related.  That was a tough one.  I first searched for sketches and chose this one from Freshly Made Sketches.

I had a stamp set from Paper Smooches called First Aid that had this ambulance image in it so my card revolved around that.  I stamped the ambulance in black ink and colored parts of it with red and blue markers.  I cut it out, mounted it on foam tape, and added some Glossy Accents to the window.  I placed it on the panel stamped with the red chevrons.  I added the pattern paper and stamped the sentiment.  I think it's pretty cute and my niece loved it.  I followed the sketch pretty literally.

That's it for me today!  Thanks for stopping by!

10 Minute Dash x 5!

Like my title?  I'm taking the Summer Card Camp 2 from Online Card Classes and the challenge today was to create a card in 10 minutes or less.  Well I failed miserably!  I had my timer on and was on my way, but I hit the 10 minute mark and probably would have finished in about 12 minutes, but then the phone rang (my iPhone which is what I was using as my timer).  Well, I forgot all about the challenge and kept on talking.  When I hung up, I remembered the timer.  It was at about 51 minutes!  Hence the 10 x 5 in my title!  Oh well!

Here's my 51 minute card!  I made this for my father-in-law who had some minor surgery this week and is in some discomfort.  I like this sentiment from a Paper Smooches set called First Aid Kit.  I stamped the bandage on Blush Blossom cardstock in Versamark then embossed it in white ep so that it looked like a bandage.  I stamped the heart (from Verve's Hearts on Fire set) in the middle with Dusty Durango ink.  I cut it out and mounted it on the panel with dimensionals.  The sentiment, from the same PS set, was stamped in Memento cocoa ink.  The dp is Basic Grey's Life of the Party.  I added a piece of ribbon and a button threaded with some twine.  The main panel and the base of the card are Cajun Craze.

I don't always finish off the inside of my cards until I need them so here is the finished off inside.  I used First Aid Kit and Sentiment Sampler for the sentiments.  The "and" is from PTI's Fresh Alphabet set.

I used this Retro Sketch for my layout.

Happy 16th Birthday!

Hi all!  Hope everyone had a nice 4th of July (if you are in the US!).  We had a nice relaxing day at our cabin.  A little rain in the afternoon, but it cleared up for the beautiful evening!
The card I made today is for our neighbors' son Kevin who turned 16 today.  By 10:30 this morning he already had his driver's permit!  Remember those days?  So I had to make a special card for him that was driving-themed.  The paper I chose is Basic Grey's Wander.  It had this cool collage paper with all sorts of road signs and such.  I thought it would work well for my theme.  The numbers are from PTI's By the Numbers dies and the sentiment is from Sentiment Sampler from Paper Smooches.
I originally used Handsome Hunter cardstock for the numbers, then changed my mind and went for the Cherry Cobbler instead.  So instead of wasting the numbers, I put them inside.  The car paper is also from Wander.

I used the Clean and Simple sketch for my layout.

Hope you are enjoying your summer!  I know I am!  Thanks for stopping by!

A Perky Plant

Hello friends!  I can't believe it's Thursday already!  I only have one week left of my summer vacation before I go back to work!  My new classroom is all set for my new kiddos and I'm a little unsettled about this whole move of our 5th graders to the Middle School.  But I have to make the best of it!  On to my card.

Yesterday was my aunt's birthday and of course a card did not get in the mail!  I have been making mostly birthday cards, so it's not like I didn't have one ready to mail....I just didn't get one mailed.  I did call her and wish her a happy birthday so she knew I was thinking of her.  So as I sat down last night to make something, I thought I'd make her a new card...something just for her.  I started by straightening out my "new" stamps that had not been put away and I forgot about this quirky little set from Paper Smooches that just makes me smile.
This set is called Perky Plants (such a great name for this set!) and the sentiment is from Sentiment Sampler, also from Paper Smooches.  I wanted to use some vibrant colors, so I went with Lauderdale paper pack from Basic Grey and Lucky Limeade and Melon Mambo cardstocks from SU.  I colored the image with copics and added some Star Dust Stickles to mimic water sprinkling out of the watering can.  I made the main image a tag and used some PTI ribbon to tie it off.  I added the two melon glitter dots to finish off the card, which follows the Sweet Sunday Sketch for this week.  I cannot believe I finally got a card done in time for this challenge!  I'm usually late using them!
Hope you enjoyed this cute little card!  I just adore it and I hope it makes my aunt smile when she gets it!  Thanks for stopping by!
