Be careful what you wish for
Late 80s. Your first day at one of the country’s biggest video rental chains should have been just another teenage job. But the customers are mean, a mysterious tape has appeared, and a careless wish under the stars may have doomed your best friend. What was supposed to be a joyful week behind the counter turned into the worst time of your life.
Renting the wrong movie can be deadly
Fun Video Store is a point & click adventure for the Game Boy Color where you spend your days running a video rental shop, and recommending movies to customers while trying to break a terrible curse that threatens your loved ones.
This demo was created in GB Studio for the GBCompo25 game jam.
The project is a parody of the long-gone golden age of video rental stores and a tribute to classic verb-based adventures.
How to play
You control the cursor with the D-Pad and use the secondary button to choose from six different actions: Go to, Look, Use, Pick up, Talk, and Inventory. Depending on the action selected, clicking on an element in the scene will trigger a different effect.
During your workday, you’ll have access to a movie database to check out cover art and read synopses. Since Fun Video Store is known for its recommendation service, you’ll need to study each customer carefully to figure out which tape they should take home. At the end of the day, you can explore the store and interact with other characters, whose reactions will vary depending on your choices.
This demo covers the first day and a half of the seven planned for the full release and serves as a showcase of the game’s themes and mechanics.

About the project
The script (over 500 lines of dialogue), the graphics (created in Aseprite), and the music (using GB Studio’s built-in tracker) were created over two and a half months. Walking the solodev path is draining but exciting!
Some free third-party assets were also used: Condensed Pixel Font by Edo999, Sweet Sounds SFX Pack by Coffee “Valen” Bat, and GB Studio Boot Logo by NeoRame.

LOVED THIS DEMO, the interactions were funny, the art was super cool and well done, and im SUPER invested in the story and need the full game!! I absolutely loved this and I can't wait to explore more in the full release!
