Fun game. It's a really different combination of genres and I'm excited to see where else this goes!

I feel like it's missing a way to dodge the attacks. Otherwise the combat is purely about getting in as many shots in per second. As it stands, it seems like the main way to progress is to grind through many play-throughs and there is not a way to get through on the first few tries through skill alone since getting hit is inevitable. From a rogue-lite I would prefer to have some pure-skill path through. (Maybe I am missing something in how it can be played though?)

Thank you ๐Ÿ˜Š

I'd have to watch you play to give you specific tips. But in general, you can avoid all attacks once you learn the enemies' patterns. I usually play through the game without dying once.

But that does take some practice. Most new players die within the first 10 fights of their first playthrough ๐Ÿ˜„

So there is a way to avoid attacks? How do you actually attempt to do that? I thought in combat I could only aim but not also move the character? Or is it that I can cause flinching with shots (I couldn't tell if shots made things flinch)?

The character (well, the hand with the gun) moves horizontally along with the chrosshair. So, you control both - the crosshair and the character. Just move to the sides when an enemy attacks :)

Ah nice!! Thanks for explaining. Maybe I missed that explanation in the initial text of the game.

You're welcome ๐Ÿ˜Š

On the controls screen, the d-pad is labled "aim / move". But that's easy to miss and doesn't really go into detail.

What a nice little game!

Thanks a lot.

No, thank you for playing ๐Ÿงก

Wow - this is awesome. Great work.
Love this kind of game mechanic!

Thanks so much ๐Ÿงก

ever thought of adding weapon variants?

like a shotgun that shoots slower yet has a bigger hit rate or a rifle that shoots slower but does more damage or a machinegun that moves slower but shoots really fast

this is like my favourite roguelite so this would be really really cool.

Yes, I wanted to include that. I even already created a couple of different weapon sprites for that. But I didn't have time to implement that until the deadline of the game jam. But if I ever revisit this game to turn it into a full release, that's definitely something I want to add.
Glad to hear you like the game ๐Ÿ˜Š

Doomslinger Dungeon is a fantastic retro-style first-person shooter with a distinct, monochromatic pixel art aesthetic. The gameplay involves navigating tight dungeon corridors and engaging in tense, real-time aiming combat against a variety of monsters. Each encounter is a challenging test of reflexes, requiring you to carefully time your shots while dodging enemy attacks. Between fights, you'll discover treasure chests that provide loot to help you survive your perilous journey. Overall, it's a simple yet highly addictive dungeon-crawling experience that will appeal to fans of classic roguelikes.

Have you ever thought about going into gaming journalism? That's a really great and concise review with very high information density. I wished all reviews would come straight to the point like you.

Anyways... I'm gald to hear you enjoyed the game. Thanks a lot for taking your time to write this review ๐Ÿ˜Š

That was cool. I never played a game boy game since I never owned one so it was interesting to play. I also can't aim to save my life. I like the visual aesthetics and if this was playable on a device I had when I was a kid I'd probably sink a lot of hours into it.

Thanks a lot ๐Ÿงก
It's not really a typical Game Boy game, though. There were only very few first-person games on Game Boy (/ Color) back in the day,

This was really fun! It took me around an hour and a half across 2 play sessions to beat. Felt brutal to game over the first time but maintaining your stats between runs made the game a lot more forgiving. There's a game kinda like this in UFO 50, which I recently played. After playing it I also thought about how neat it would be to have a dungeon crawler but with a gun. Glad to see someone else execute on it, and it turned out great!

Amazing game, always wanted to keep coming back for one more run until I finished it. Easy recommend for folks wanting a new GB game.

Thank you. Glad to hear you had a good time ๐Ÿ˜Š

Very cool so far! I would like to suggest the old classic of mimic chests to surprise a player and give a little more challenge when getting goodies, especially skill crystals, and a possible exp reward on killing.

That's a neat idea! I'll keep that in mind in case I revisit this game at some time in the future. Thanks! ๐Ÿ‘

This game is great.

Thank you ๐Ÿ™

Your games are absolutely amazing all-around and incredibly well-polished. I am sure if these games were released back in the days they would be amongst the most popular on gameboy. You should feel proud of yourself, the games are really top class. So glad I found you!

Wow, thanks a lot! That's really a comment to print out, frame and put on the wall ๐Ÿคฉ

I was pretty down today and actually thought about giving up on making new games. It's hard to overstate how much your comment means to me. Thank you ๐Ÿงก

Wow, really cool! I like that the game slowly gets easier as you progres.

Thanks. Glad you like it ๐Ÿ˜Š

Thoroughly enjoying this game! Excellent work!

SUPER FUN!! Insanely creative, the art was really neat, and i loved that this could be possible in GB Studio. 10/10

Thanks a lot for checking out my game and thanks for sharing the video. It's always interesting and fun to see how other people experience your games. Glad to see you had a good time ๐Ÿ˜Š

This game is simply amazing. i died alot but i love it and to see those patters in the enemys i keep getting better at it. Its so good! And those Bosses... oh my goodie! <3

Thanks a lot! Glad you enjoyed playing ๐Ÿ˜Š
I would love to add lots of additional floors and turning this game into a full release. But there are other game projects I need to focus on beforehand ๐Ÿฅฒ

I sure hope you do one day! For now i focus on beating this game :)

Great game, I've already cleared it. Could you please share how you managed to display so many numerical values on the stats screen using GB Studio in this game?

Thanks a lot. Glad you liked it ๐Ÿ˜Š
I used the Display Advanced Dialogue Version B plugin by Brian Rollins to display the numerical values in the stat screen.

In short, a Halloween version of Doom but runs on the Gameboy!

I love this! I have absolutely no idea why there weren't more (or any that I can find) games like this released during the gameboys' lifespan! I reckon you could have started a franchise back in the day.

Glad you like it ๐Ÿ˜Š
To my knowledge there were not really any comparable games during the Game Boy's Lifespan. While there were some FPS like Faceball or Ray-Thunder, they were rather trying to emulate PVP experiences and had pretty clunky controls. Also, they did not have any level or upgrade system as far as I know. But they were still very impressive from a technical perspective.

Gold!

Thanks a lot for checking out and sharing my game ๐Ÿงก

You played an old version that still contained a couple of bugs. If you ever want to revisit the game, please download the most recent ROM. I'll be releasing more updates in the future, adding much more content.

Wonderful sprite work, love the paired down elements of a first person shooter. Plays great. Congratulations!

Thank you so much ๐Ÿ˜Š

Just beat the game and absolutely loved it. I hope you can do more with this in the future! some sort of endless mode would be fantastic. Well done!

Thanks a lot ๐Ÿ™

I have many more ideas for the game. One of them indeed is an endless mode ๐Ÿ˜Š

But after the 10 days of the game jam I first have to catch up with some real-life stuff ๐Ÿ˜…

this feels like a game where, if the controls were better, it'd be too easy but it has an Interesting concept and i like the artwork. Plus, the roguelike elements could prove valuable on a second playthru.

Thanks for your feedback. In which way do you think the controls could be better? I want to improve the game after the voting period is over :)

It's hard to articulate but using a cursor as a crosshair is always difficult. However, here it's the speed of the enemies.

Like I said, I don't know how to balance it as if you make them too slow, it'd be too easy.

Hm... I could not think of any other way to make a movable crosshair on Game Boy.

Hello, excellent work! A suggestion for aiming would be like the one in the SNES game Wild Guns. One button to shoot. Another button to hold to aim. You could even add two taps to the side to dodge.

I haven't played Wild Guns yet. But I'm going to look into that. Thanks a lot for the suggestion :)
