What's that ? We have unused assets from Far Cry 5 and you don't know what to do with them ? I have an idea... Is someone using all that flashy paint over there ? No ? Good. Let's change the whole atmosphere and make a spin-off that takes place in the same region, after the end of the story. We'll call it... Far Cry New Dawn.

The game may use the same map as Far Cry 5, but it looks vastly different. Who knew a nuclear disaster would bring so much color to the world !
The grass has never been greener, flashy paint has been sprayed everywhere, cars stick out of the ground as if they had been carefully planted all over the county... As beautiful and realistic as Far Cry 5 was, New Dawn looks crazy and cool, and I absolutely loved it.
The same goes for the design of the makeshift weapons : recycled parts, tape and strings everywhere... You can't customize them anymore, but they look like they really belong in this world, and there are many more this time around !
They're sorted into tiers, same as the enemies. I'm not particularly fond of that type of mechanic, but the higher tiers unlock very quickly as you progress through the story, because of how short it is. So you'll be crafting piercing and explosive bullets in no time, since everyone in this new era is wearing helmets (it's annoying for headshots, but they get a pass because I think helmets look cool too).

The resources used to craft weapons and special ammunitions can be found all over the place, looted on enemies, or traded for animal skins. You will soon be drowning in most of these, except for ethanol and circuit boards. Ethanol is used to upgrade your hub, and can be obtained by liberating outposts, the old Far Cry special. For circuit boards and other rare materials, you'll have to turn to the "Expeditions".
Expeditions are self-contained small maps you reach by chopper, that have nothing to do with the story and thus don't need any justification to exist. Probably more unused assets ! But they're a really convenient way to give players access to rare resources or animals that are hard to find in the main game. Higher difficulty expeditions even have randomized elements to be played over and over, and an endless supply of enemies to try your weapons on.
Plus, they're really cool places ! A huge plane wreck, Alcatraz Island... An abandoned amusement park ? Sign me up and never sign me out !

Guess who's back ? The challenges that reward you with skill points. Skill points that unlock abilities the say way they did in Far Cry 5, but this time you even get a few superpowers, like invisibility, super strength, or a very useful double jump. Why ? Because this is Far Cry New Dawn, and Far Cry New Dawn is crazy, that's why !
Can you guess who else is back ? The fun companions. Hurk is still here, I guess he can travel through space and time, now that he's been to the moon... There's also Nana, the youngest grandma in Hope County, or a mysterious Judge trying to atone for his past. Haratio is just a boar, but he doesn't care : he'll still want to join you, and you'd be wrong not to give him a chance. Not only does Horatio revive himself (he really doesn't care), but he also charges at enemies, destroys shields and scares away wild life. And it's always fun to watch bodies fly as you focus on other enemies. Go Horatio, go !

Far Cry New Dawn is indeed really fun, but it's also pretty lazy. The buildings have been destroyed and the fauna displays bright new colors, but the map is still the same as in Far Cry 5. It's even half as big now, because of the toxic cloud that has spread everywhere. Those who wanted answers after the ending of the previous game will find some clues here, but it doesn't feel satisfying.
Yet, the main issue with the game is that it's very short. The story flies by and only slows down a couple of times to force you to upgrade your hub, but if you don't care about exploring, hunting, or trying out the different weapons, you could be done in 10 to 12 hours ! That's extremely brief for a Far Cry game.

I've loved the short time I've spent with Far Cry New Dawn. Fun missions in a flashy-looking environment, a lot of cool weapons to experiment with and many cool characters... I just wish there was more to do with them.
It's more Far Cry for those who like the series, but it still feels like a generous Dlc. At least they had the decency not to sell the game full price !
So I think a 7 is fair. It's very good, but very short.

Having just finished the game and cleared nearly 60% of the achievements in two weeks, I can say FC New Dawn is a fantastic follow-up to Far Cry 5. The post-apocalyptic setting is surprisingly beautiful. The "Super Bloom" makes the world pop with neon colors and stunning graphics that feel even more polished than the original. The story is a satisfying sequel that ties up loose ends from Hope County, and seeing how the characters have evolved over 17 years adds a great layer of depth. The side missions are catchy and rewarding, especially the new Expeditions which take you to unique locations outside the main map. If you enjoyed the chaos of Far Cry 5, this colorful evolution is definitely worth the play.

If you loved Far Cry 5, this has a lot of nostalgia, but more replayability.
