Holder of Place is a simple game at an affordable price tag, with a good number of different options for replay value.

Runs start easy, giving you time to understand the flow of the game (Fight -> Shop -> Fight -> Shop) with low stake fights.
Runs ramp up quick, with both your build getting access to much more powerful cards quickly and enemy units getting a lot scarier.
Runs doesn't overstay their welcome, when you begin to feel as though your build has capped its strength you find yourself at the final boss. The speed of play feels natural and good.

Holder of Place has a lot of restrictions. You can only have so many units, units start with one trait and can only be empowered with one trait, you can only hold so much faith (currency), and you can only buy 1 thing at each shop with only 1 item locked at a time and no rerolls. These restrictions make the game simplier to learn so you are not overwhelmed by options, however they introduce scarcity as a pain point for strategy as you learn how the game works. It also means that the game can give you ways to break the restrictions at a fair price if you choose, such as buying an expensive relic in the mid game that gives you rerolls for the rest of the run.

Holder of Place is a prime example that a game doesn't have to be larger than life to be a good game. It's not trying to be a big and loud reinvention of the genre and it doesn't wow with big spectacles and cinematics. It's instead bold in its lack of boldness, a game with the self confidence that it has a good core gameplay loop, good replay value, and a good log-based story.
Holder of Place isn't a gimmick and it isn't a slot machine. It is a game as timeless as its setting. A game I imagine I will return to every so often, to see once again the glimpse of light over the kingdom of Mir.
