A wonderful love letter and passion project that celebrates all things horror.

Final Score: 9.5/10

Make no mistake about the name, World of Horror is very literal. Its no secret that this game is inspired by everything horror-related within the past century and chock full of references. You'll find everything from H.P Lovecraft and Junji Ito to R.L Stine's Goosebumps series; Table-top games like Arkham Horror and Call of Cthulhu; Internet culture such as SCP and The Backrooms; Countless movies and tv shows; real life events; and many (many) urban myths and legends. This list is so expansive that the community keeps a list of everything they've found so far (and it is very expansive).

As for the game itself, style is very much the name of the game here. This game spares nothing to make the player feel as though they've entered a completely different world. One where old gods threaten the very existence of the world and where the monsters in the dark are all too real. The heavily stylized graphics, the cross-faded soundtracks, THE UI FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. It all coalesces to create a unique immersive experience that is seldom seen these days.

However, it is because the style carries so much of the game that the gameplay itself feels all the more lackluster in comparison. Not to say it isn't bad , but it feels like there could've have been so much more to it. As it stands now (at the time of the 1.0 release) there are still a few too many placeholder elements (the lighthouse being the most egregious one in particular) that holds the game itself back. Because heavy RNG is a part of the core design philosophy, the game can feel extremely frustrating at times, and this is only exacerbated on higher end difficulties. In a game that is about calculated losses and swaying rolls to your favor, it can feel especially bad if you're unlucky enough to experience a string of bad events or fights that would otherwise ruin a decent run.

All in all, the game itself is still one of the best roguelike rpgs i've played in a long time, and the faults are more than overshadowed by the rest of the game. Its also made by like one polish dentist in their spare time (with some help from other very talented people of course) which is quite impressive.

Final Score: 9.5/10
