TL;DR: A story-driven narrative with a unique style of combat. Also, Tim Burton.


The Good

  • Burtonesque art style with a lovely, yet creepy vibe.
  • As non-linear as a linear story game could be!
  • Secrets galore, and a distinct lack of RNG in my random rolls game!
  • A satisfying story conclusion, yet equal parts sad.
  • A fairly easy 100% achievement game, as long as you pay attention.

The Random

  • The length of the game's story leaves much to be desired.
    Though I just praised the game's story narrative on two different occasions, the length of the story overall is quite a short one. Because EA, of course. I hope we do see DLC to extend this game's shelf life.
  • Random rules... the gameplay!
    Random rolls tend to be a common appearance in the world of Random, and though the introduction of a dice mechanic is done in the most clever way possible without making the game outwardly rage inducing, it can make an already slow-paced combat gameplay feel that much worse in practice.
  • Miss-ability!
    While there's no question that it wouldn't be the worst use of your time to re-run the main story multiple times to help learn all there is to know about Random, there are certain characters and events tied to points in the story that can be easily missed (and rendered unachievable in your playthrough) if you aren't paying attention. News flash, I wasn't, as I have not replayed the game to finish my 100% run.

Lost in Random is fantastic in so many ways. I'm absolutely enthralled with this game's direction. The combat, while it is simple and easy to master s incredibly fun and the repetition doesn't get old very quickly. Just please look at one of the many guides available to 100% the game if you haven't started yet, it'll make your life so much easier.
