For me the greatest strengths of Mass Effect are the voice acting, the music, the characters, and the world. All the little details and back story in the codex, flesh out all the stuff you never see. The story starts off not so great, but it does improve over time (it never becomes mind-blowing or anything though). One of the biggest weaknesses of the first game is the side missions, they all seem a bit same-y after a while. They do fix the controls in the second game, IMHO. While I never noticed the graphics being fuzzy, the second and third game do look a lot better than the first. Also, I'm not sure if you're aware but the game has a few points where very different outcomes occur depending on your choices, and these carry over into games two and three. If somebody dies, they stay dead.

I see you finally got Mass Effect! One of my favorite game series of the last few years (even if I wasn't fond of the ending). BTW, I recommend playing the game as a female, Jennifer Hale is a much better voice actor than Mark Meer (the voice of the male Commander Shepard). Also, keep an ear out for Armin Shimerman, Seth Green, and Marina Sirtis. Lots of recognizable actors in the series.
