Coming from a traditional RTS or Total War-approach, this game takes you above and beyond strategy-wise. It's not so much a pure strategy game as it is an attempt at civilization simulation at a more intense real-time and macro scale than we know from the Sid Meyer titles.

Complex with very little hand holdning, it's up to you to read up on details, get accustomed to the mechanics of religion, culture, technology, army strategy, etc., and figure out how to build cities that thrive with the right provincial support combination of farming, industry and more.

If you enjoy a complex and immersive title where you've got to make an effort, this is a good choice.

If you hope to gloss over details and use it as a war sim, TW-style, you're better off doing something else.
