An Elegy Belongs to the Game itself

The game no longer needs a recommendation.

A Möbius band is formed when you twist a strip of paper and connect its opposite ends. To me, that perfectly tells the theme of Mobius & Elegy Belongs to Nobody. It is a story of misconnections and an eternal loop of conflict.

On this vast Möbius band of a world, one side is occupied by humans, and the other by the so-called "devils"—a name given by humans to the original inhabitants they oppressed. Now, the remaining "devils" seek revenge for the genocide human brings upon them. Born into this cycle of perpetual hatred between races, people are forced into a war with no truly righteous side.

War doesn't determine who's right, it determines who's left.

When the introduction asks, “A haughty girl knight? A kind human girl? Ultimately, how will you choose?", there is, in truth, no choice. Everything is already set in stone by the cruel and twisted fate.

Yet, despite the malice hanging over this world, individuals find their own light with unimaginable tolerance and courage. Jonah does not choose to abandon the nameless boy and marry the knight; instead, she finds peace in her life as the boy’s mother. Vera does not choose to suffer the cruelty and injustice inflicted by other humans, but she stands firm in her beliefs, protecting the values she holds dear until her final breath.

The making of this game also reflects deep internal conflict and struggle. Its grand worldbuilding and more than six key characters are compressed into just three hours of storytelling. Facing delays and budget constraints, the developers nevertheless chose to completely rework the game engine and the CGs. And now I can say the result speaks for itself.

This, therefore, is not a recommendation. It is an elegy for a game forgotten.

The game is available only in Simplified Chinese; no English translation exists.

I bought the game during its crowdfunding campaign, but had gone abroad when the rewards were shipped due to the rework delays. Only recently did I finally receive the physical rewards, thanks to a friend who kept them for me.

Shortly after launch, the developer admitted that the game had failed at PR, and revenue was nearly zero. When someone suggested offering a launch discount, the developer declined, saying it would be unfair to early supporters—the game launched at the same price as during crowdfunding. Following the failure, the promised sequel was indefinitely postponed. About three years ago, the developer disbanded, marking the end of this story. (There was much happening in the Chinese indie game scene at the time—a topic worthy of an article on its own, but I digress.)
