As requested I have retried the game and I am actually fairy pleased with the result. While the aesthetic is still tablet-like, the feel of the quest game play (my favorite mode) is very similar to the original.. With a couple of caveats. This version is defiantly one I feel I could play through and not just be a watered down copy of the classic (which is also included).

I've only played a few levels but have an understanding of it works, perks are now included in quests - no cheating required. It is however forced upgrades unlike the classic, once you level up you get a popup to choose a perk. It can interrupt the flow of a level, and forces you to take a perk even if you didn't feel you needed one, e.g. when the level is complete, or like I used to do in the classic, find some breathing room and upgrade them all at once xD... I guess that was a bit silly too.

The other glaring omission I miss a lot is the local quest scores, I loved replaying levels, using different strategies and guns, trying to get the best scores and times.

I'm happy with the result now, the game is much more fun to play with perks in quest mode, Its certainly worth a buy, especially as you get the classic version too.

Cheers.

Many thanks! We still may update Crimsonland, although we're mainly preoccupied with our brand new shooter Neon Chrome.

The classic version is now included! The remastered version is also now much more like the classic version in key areas (perks in quests, telekinesis, typ'o'shooter...) It'd be really cool if you gave the game another go, and if it's more fun to you now, updated your review.
