This is my first ever Souls game. I bought Dark Souls 3 but only ever played a tiny bit of it and didn't really get a kick out of it. I do, however, really enjoy open world survival games games and this very much tickled that itch for me. This is one of the the most enjoyable experiences I have had playing a game in a very long time. I would recommend this game highly.
