In short, this isn't exactly a game by itself, but a tool for people to create their own game(modes)s (often meant to be played with multiple people), and easily share them with the public. Garry's mod takes the genre sandbox to the extreme, allowing you to grab a bunch of stuff from the workshop, such as (player) models, objects, maps, constructs, effects, tools, and most importantly gamemodes, and start playing alone, with friends, or in public servers. Of course there is also a sandbox gamemode in which you are free to fool around in a map of your choice, while building, creating, experimenting, with the stuff you've downloaded through the workshop.

This is a good game on its own, but having company takes it into the next level.
