THIS REVIEW HAS BEEN UPDATED TO POSITIVE AS SONY HAS BACKED DOWN FROM THEIR DECISION
I can now properly recommend this game as the one major issue holding it back, the PSN requirement, has been revoked. I love democracy.

I'm gonna start this by saying I absolutely love this game, it's easily the best co-op game to come out in years. Hell, it's put together so damn well that it feels more like 2 games in one with each front (currently the east Terminid front and west Automaton front), on top of being able to take up completely different playstyles based on what loadout you choose.

There's two reasons I'm giving the game a red review, and the main one is due to the drama everyone and their mom's dog knows about.
THE BELOW SECTION HAS BEEN STRIKED OUT AS IT IS NO LONGER RELEVANT
That being Sony forcing Arrowhead's hand to re-implement a mandatory PSN link for PC players. A lot of people don't remember or know this, but initially on launch day you had to link a PSN, but this was disabled as it was causing a lot of problems with logging in on top of the existing server issues.

The fact that it was disabled should speak enough to the fact that the game functions just fine without it, and has done so for several months at the time of this review. There have been two big reasons cited as to why it is now being re-enabled, the first one being "security reasons" (PSN & Sony get hacked on a monthly basis), and the second one, courtesy of an Arrowhead CM, is this will make it easier to punish bad actors (banning trolls, etc).

I've got 218 hours as of this review, and I have not once had a player cause an issue that couldn't be solved by either yourself or other players in the lobby (offensive language? mute, teamkilling? TK them back or kick them if you're hosting, etc). I'm not gonna go on with how I feel about this most likely leading to false or unfair bans due to "problematic language" or even accidental TK's that get reported. All of this as well as the fact that PSN isn't even available in several countries, countries that make up a large playerbase of the game currently, mind, and players bought the game will be unable to play after this change goes in effect.

Carrying on past that as the thousands of other reviews and forum posts can explain all of that better than I can, my second issue stems with the CM's as well as some devs' balance decisions.

On several occasions, largely due to these balance passes, the CM's have had to come out to temper the fire that is an upset community. Or at least that's what their job should be.

Instead, they usually say that said community are whiny babies or some variation of such. Personally I think it's hilarious, but to say it's anything less than unprofessional is a joke. Add onto that the people who will defend AH to the death, and it's extremely hard to have a conversation anywhere about the more questionable balance changes (tried to talk in a reddit thread about the eruptor nerf being too much, got told I was mad over the quasar cannon nerf, lmao).

Add on that these balance patches usually bring on more nerfs to weapons that perform, and few buffs to weapons that don't. E.G the last balance patch, as of this review, nerfed the Eruptor, an admittedly very strong weapon, and "reworked" (nerfed) the Crossbow, an already bad weapon.

Then the buffs given in exchange are a whole 5 extra damage to the Liberator and other useless number tweaks like that. On top of that, they classify QOL changes as buffs (the Adjudicator had its default fire mode set from semi-auto to full-auto, this was considered a buff for some reason), this is clearly just so they can say there's more buffs than nerfs when in reality it didn't change anything (also not commenting on various absurd "fixes" that have happened over the previous balance patches).

Overall, do I recommend this game in spite of the color of my review? I wish I could, because I love it so damn much and it really feels (felt) like a real labor of love by the devs. But unless Sony can quit trying to ruin everything they touch, and Arrowhead can get their CM's egos in line, I can't recommend it, at least not until the PSN requirement goes away.
And I'm most likely gonna end up putting this game away after they force all of us to link a PSN, but until then I'll keep trying to enjoy it, as we all should be able to.
I now recommend this game in spite of the sometimes obnoxious CM's and questionable balance decisions, as we now know that being loud enough can get ♥♥♥♥ done.
