Ah, Rust. A game where dreams of building empires are crushed by naked dudes with rocks. It’s a brutal, unforgiving sandbox where trust is currency, betrayal is entertainment, and everyone is out to ruin your day. But there’s one group that suffers more than anyone else in this wasteland—and no, it’s not fresh spawns.

It’s the Road Scientists.

These poor, hazmat-wearing NPCs are just trying to do their job: guarding barrels, pacing roads, and making sure that the apocalypse doesn’t spiral even further into chaos. Yet players treat them like walking piñatas stuffed with mediocre loot and crushed dreams.

Why, oh why, do we bully these hardworking road protectors?

You see a Scientist. He’s standing there, minding his own business, maybe whispering science-y things like, “The half-life of uranium is fascinating.” And what do players do? Immediately blast him in the face with a shotgun. Not because they need to—oh no—but because they can.

And what’s their reward for this blatant act of road-rage homicide?

A couple of scrap.
Some low-grade fuel.
Guilt. (At least for me. You psychos probably feel nothing.)
Honestly, I think the Scientists deserve better. These guys are the backbone of Rust society. Without them, who would pace ominously near the roadside and provide us with a mild challenge? Who would protect those random barrels full of garbage-tier loot we’re too greedy to pass up?

But no, players keep bullying them like they’re the last kid picked in dodgeball. And it’s not even fair—have you seen their aim? The poor dudes couldn’t hit a moving target if their life depended on it (which it does). Meanwhile, Chad over here is headshotting them with a crossbow from 50 meters away.

So here’s my plea to the Rust community:
LEAVE THE ROAD SCIENTISTS ALONE.
They’re not just NPCs—they’re people (probably…maybe…look, the lore’s vague). If we keep slaughtering them, one day they’ll unionize, and then what? Scientists armed with AKs and a thirst for revenge. You’ve been warned.

Until then, I’ll keep playing Rust, but every time I see one of these poor guys get bullied, I shed a single pixelated tear. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go shoot a naked guy trying to steal my hemp farm.
